That’s how you lose a Top 10 university offer before you’ve even written an essay. After 23+ years in admissions, here’s the reality: Top universities (Imperial, NUS, Ivies) don’t just want a 45/45. They read your subjects as a signal of intent.
The 3 Rules of Selection:
The Group 5 Trap: AA vs. AI isn’t about “difficulty.” It’s about alignment. Some STEM programs will bin your application instantly if you chose AI, even if you got a 7.
The “Safety” Myth: Students often kill their only differentiator, Group 6 (Arts) to take a third Science they don’t even need. If everyone has Physics/Chem, the Theatre HL student is the one who stands out.
Reverse-Engineer the 7: Don’t pick subjects and “hope.” Match your HLs to your target degree and pick the path where a 7 is non-negotiable.
