DEAbout 15 minutes before the annual Ginger Run at the University of Delaware on Saturday, one Newark police officer declared, "It's not going to happen."
The unorganized, word-of-mouth March 15 event features hundreds of redheaded students racing down Choate Street in downtown Newark. In recent years it has surged in popularity, fueled by social media and drawn thousands of students to the St. Patrick's Day-themed event.
After last year's race drew a big crowd, with students shutting down the street for the non-permitted flash mob-type event, police were determined to stop it this year.
Newark police had officers roaming the street – some holding batons – and positioned police vehicles side by side in the middle of the block to prevent the race.
