AB🚨 Attention ULIP Investors!🚨
Is someone selling you Unit Linked Insurance Plans (ULIPs)?
I recently analyzed a client's ULIP policies & what I discovered left me questioning the motivations of insurance companies and advisors behind the structuring and sale of these policies.
1️⃣ Maturity Payouts: ULIP policies often schedule maturity payouts close to or well beyond retirement. Delaying access to funds when they are needed the most is a critical issue.
2️⃣ Lackluster Returns: Upon analyzing these policies, the average IRR of scheduled cash flows was only 5-7%. Even after considering tax benefits and deducting premium for a corresponding term life insurance, the investment portion yields a mere 6.5-8.5% in annual return.
How can this be justified by any advisor when a combination of term life insurance & mutual funds is a suitable alternate to meet the same objectives, with 12-15% in annual return?
The difference between a ULIP policy v/s a combination of term life insurance and mutual fund for similar coverage and time horizon. The difference in maturity payout ranges from 2x in a 20-year policy to even 60x in a 65-year policy.
3️⃣ Tax Implications: Despite tax code changes in 2021, ULIP policies were sold with annual premiums exceeding 2.5 lakhs, resulting in taxable maturity payouts akin to long-term equity investments.
4️⃣ Surrender Value Calculation: ULIP policies make it difficult for investors to surrender in the initial years, but once 80% of the premium paying term is over, surrendering becomes easier.
5️⃣Agents receive commissions up to 40% of the first-year premium and 10-20% of subsequent premiums. Are these motivations aligned with your best interests?
So what should you do NOW?
✅ Review: Carefully review your policies, inquire about investment returns, fees, and surrender value calculations from your advisor. Understand their motivations and the potential trade-offs to switch to mutual funds.
✅ Make Informed Decisions: Armed with facts, make decisions aligned with your financial goals and risk tolerance.
