MIUltra Q (ウルトラQ)is a Japanese television series produced by Tsuburaya Productions that premiered on Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) on January 2, 1966. Ultra Q is first in the “Ultra” series and is canonically the first entry in the Ultraman franchise even though the character of Ultraman is not introduced until the second series. Ultra Q was intended to be a suspenseful serialized drama with a tone similar to the American series The Twilight Zone or The Outer Limits. The series featured a regular cast of characters who would investigate strange phenomena. Episodes would explore what would happen if the balance of nature was disturbed and how humans would react to mysterious phenomena. The series featured stories involving the supernatural, psychological, and sci-fi mysteries, but as the series progress it became popular for its use of kaiju and produced more monster centric episodes. The series ran for 28 episodes. The series was incredibly popular, but the even greater popularity of kaiju at the time prompted TBS to ask Tsuburaya Productions to develop a follow-up series that focused on giant monsters battling giant heroes. This resulted in the creation of Ultraman.
