YOUpright, downright, outright... you may think that these three words have similar meanings because they look similar, but you’d be mistaken! In today’s video, I explain their meanings and tell you how they’re typically used in everyday conversations, and as always, try and write an example sentence of your own with at least one of them in the comments below! 😊
Below, you’ll find the meanings of these three related-but-unrelated words:
🔸upright = if something is upright, this means that it’s in a vertical and straight position. You can sit upright, you can stand upright, and an object can be upright. One common situation that you’d hear this word in is on a plane, as a common announcement made before takeoff reminds people to keep their seats and tray tables in an upright position.
🔸downright = contrary to what you might think, this word is NOT the opposite of “upright.” Instead, we typically put it before negative adjectives and nouns (usually adjectives) to emphasize them, so it more or less means “very” or “extremely”:
I didn’t even touch my food because it was downright disgusting.

🔸outright = if something happens or if someone does something outright, this means that they do it completely or directly. This word is most commonly used after verbs (you’ll often see or hear it at the very end of a sentence), but it can also be an adjective that means “total” or “direct”:
She didn’t just refuse his offer to go to the dance, she rejected it outright.
I didn’t expect them to say yes, but I didn’t think they’d just say no outright.
An outright ban on smoking will be enforced in public spaces.
