MAMoving to the USA is exciting — but it can also feel so overwhelming. 🛫
When we moved from the Netherlands Toronto and then to Texas, I had no idea where to start. From finding the right schools for the kids, to figuring out health insurance, to even understanding the drive-thru culture (yes, even at the bank! 🤯)… it was a lot.
So if you’re just starting your own expat journey, here are my top 5 tips for settling in faster:
1️⃣ Join local mom groups or expat groups — both online (Facebook, WhatsApp) and in your area. It’s the fastest way to make friends and get insider tips.
2️⃣ Get to know the school system — it’s so different from Europe. From drop-off lines to PTA meetings, it helps to ask other moms what to expect.
3️⃣ Start small with culture shocks — grocery shopping, driving, or even eating out feels different. Give yourself time to adjust — and laugh about it when you can.
4️⃣ Learn about healthcare early — co-pays, insurance networks, urgent care… knowing how it works before you need it is a lifesaver.
5️⃣ Keep a piece of home — whether it’s your favorite coffee, Dutch snacks, or a WhatsApp call with family, little routines make the transition easier. 🌷
Remember: you don’t have to have it all figured out at once. And trust me… you’re not alone. 💞
