When I started my clinics, I thought I had to stay silent and just observe. But once I started asking the right questions, everything changed: doctors remembered me, offered me mentorship, and helped me grow faster. Here’s curious questions I asked that actually sparked great conversation: 1. “What other differentials should we consider and what helped you narrow down in this case?” 2. “What signs or red flags do you never ignore in this case?” 3. “How do you approach building patient trust so quickly?” 4. “What made you choose this specialty?” 5. “What’s the biggest challenge in your day-to-day practice?” 6. “How do you stay updated on new treatments and guidelines?” 7. “What do you look for in a good med student on rotation and what are your expectations from me?” 8. “Mid week feedback- How can I improve?” It’s not about just trying to impress, it’s about being genuinely curious and intentional. Thoughtful questions show that you’re not just there to observe, you’re there to learn. Save this before your next shadowing shift. It might just open doors. Connect with seniors and alumni Reach out to students who have already completed rotations—especially those who have matched. Alumni are often very helpful, so ask them politely about available opportunities. 2. Use shared resources (PDFs & email lists) Many people share PDF files containing doctors’ emails (often found on platforms like LinkedIn). Look for these resources and send cold emails professionally. 3. Leverage LinkedIn strategically LinkedIn is one of the most powerful tools. Consider getting premium for a short time (especially 4–5 months before Match season) and send direct messages to doctors about rotations or guidance. 4. Maximize one opportunity If you secure one rotation in the U.S., use it wisely. Network actively—talk to your preceptor and other doctors. One connection can lead to multiple opportunities. 5. Engage with community centers When in the U.S., connect with local community centers (e.g., Muslim communities). Many professionals there are willing to guide you—approach them respectfully. 6. Network within your own community Whether it’s a Pakistani community or your home-country network, these groups are often very supportive. Build connections and ask for guidance—they can open many doors.

For many IMGs, getting strong US clinical experience is not just about completing a rotation It is about choosing environments that actually strengthen your application The right hospital can improve mentorship, exposure, networking, and the quality of your recommendation letters Why this matters Because observerships and externships are not attendance certificates They are opportunities to build credibility inside the US system Pro tip Do not choose rotations randomly Prioritize institutions where IMGs have historically gained strong exposure, teaching, and meaningful mentorship #usmle #imgjourney #usce #medicalstudents #residencymatch

Thinking about observerships in the US? BE PREPARED and try not to improvise. If you need a letter of recommendation, and you're thinking to apply next ERAS cycle, remember that an observership doesn't secure a LOR, and It'll depend on your performance, so this is your opportunity to shine, to do your best, support the residents and healthcare teams, and remember, you're there to learn. Good luck!! 💫✨️ #internalmedicine #drcindysierra #USCE #observerships #usmlejourney
