Use your zone as a foundation when choosing crops, perennials, shrubs, and trees that have the best chance of thriving.
It’s also helpful to remember that a hardiness zone is a guide, not a limitation. Gardeners often extend their growing options with tools like greenhouses, cold frames, row covers, and microclimate awareness. These methods can allow you to grow plants that may not naturally tolerate your zone’s winter lows. Indoor gardening is not affected by hardiness zones because you have full control over temperature and growing conditions.
