I recently learned that @cityofvancouver will be cutting the Sustainability Office in tomorrow’s budget vote along with other community programs — a decision that would undo 50 years of progress towards @greenestcity. Knowing it would be unpopular, the draft budget was released less than two weeks ago, with no real opportunity for public feedback. We’re just going to say it: this Vancouver community is AMAZING. When we found out about Mayor Sim’s austerity budget and sneaky plan to pass it, we weren’t sure we could respond effectively in time. Turns out, we didn’t need to worry. Between the efforts of the Stand.earth community and our allies (shoutout @womentransformingcities @dogwoodbc @bc_cape @margie.sanderson @povreductionbc, the arts community) and so many more, not only did we send more than 17,000 messages to Vancouver City Council, 631 people signed up to speak – as far as we can tell, that’s a city record. It took four days just to get through them all! The Vancouver community is making sure that Mayor Sim couldn’t sweep this deeply unpopular budget under the rug and pass it covertly. And let’s be clear – his budget is *deeply unpopular.* In additional to all the messages and speakers, more than 100 Vancouver-bases businesses from all different sectors are unhappy with what Mayor Sim is planning and how non-transparently he’s handled this situation. Even the city’s own budget survey showed only 10% of people agreed with the mayor’s plan. With a vote on the budget coming on Tuesday, now’s the time to ratchet up to pressure even more. Vancouver residents can comment BUDGET to get access to our tool that provides you with a script and lets you call key votes on council about this issue (even calling after hours or on the weekend and leaving a message matters a lot!). You can also head to the link in our bio to access the tool that will help you send an email to council. And if you’re free Tuesday morning, @womentransformingcities is organizing a change-in at City Hall from 9-10:30am, in protest of removing changing tables from public bathrooms (amongst all the other 💩 -y things in this budget).
