TEWhen an athlete generates and absorbs force with valgus or varus knee positioning, hip abductors (gluteus medius and gluteus maximus), and potentially hip external rotators (gluteus maximus, piriformis), are often weak, leading to biomechanical imbalances. Weak hip abductors are particularly associated with valgus knee, while weakness in external rotators can contribute to both valgus and varus.
I recently received an inquiry from a parent asking how I could enhance their athlete’s jumping ability within a short timeframe. I explained that technique plays a significant role and proceeded to break down specific aspects. In this instance, the young athlete consistently displayed valgus knee positioning when generating force. Many athletes with weak adductors and hip flexors tend to produce force from a valgus or varus knee position. To address this, I had the athlete wear a band around his knee to increase awareness of his knee positioning. This simple adjustment enabled him to correct the issue exponentially in just one session. Although significant progress remains to be made, the athlete is improving and now understands the errors in his technique.
Some adjustments are still required regarding his foot position and related elements; nonetheless, he has shown exponential progress in a single session, and upon integrating into my regular program focused on addressing those weak muscle groups, he will naturally produce force in an appropriate manner.
