You can be upright with an epidural With some assistance, you can still do a variety of labor and pushing positions with an epidural. Now, for some you will have more or less ability to move your legs BUT little free tip....you can request to have your dosage adjusted 😉 (now that means you'll feel more of the contractions but maybe you don't mind? That's a personal choice) I love the squat bar because it allows you to take advantage of gravity and also act as an achor to hold a squat. You can also easily rest in between surges by leaning on the bar, and there are a variety of positions you can even do with the bar! So epidural or not, the squat bar can be a great tool to try during labor. We did a number of pushing positions along with the bar to keep labor progressing. ✨️And biggggg shout out to mom for rocking her vbac with all the twists and turns, including pushing out a straight-up OP (sunny side up) baby. 💪🏾💅🏾 Did you use a Squat bar? They said she couldn’t. They said she could die. They said her uterus would rupture. They said her baby may not survive. They said a vaginal birth after three C-sections and a uterine window was impossible. But God 🙌 He writes a different story. This mama didn’t need another fear-based lecture, she needed someone to look her in the eye and say, “You can.” And by the grace of God, she did. I just walked out of L&D grinning like a wild woman because I witnessed a miracle: A VBAC after 3 cesareans at 42 weeks and 3 days ☺️ A birth no one believed in… except her and the God who made her body and me, her doula 😊 Faith isn’t denial of risk. It’s belief in a higher authority. Women of faith are a different breed because we listen to the voice of the Spirit over the voice of fear. I’m not here to argue with statistics. When I told my doc I wanted a VBAC she was against it. Eventually she got on board after I stood my ground and listened to her explain all the risks. Then I told her I wanted to go unmedicated. She was strongly against it, but I insisted and she eventually agreed to let me try. I knew I needed someone that would be on board for what I wanted. Someone who could cheer me on, support me, focus on successful statistics (iykyk). Enter @emilystanwyck we met, talked, and I knew I had found who I needed. Emily was there for me when the baby was breech- offered advice, told me to seek out chiropractor care (thank you @willow_haus ), suggested all the ideas. She was there to talk me through strategies when doc pushed for a planned c-section after 40 weeks. She was a safe place for me to land when anxious pregnancy brain kicked in. She supported ME and advocated for ME. Fast forward to March 10, I’m in labor- excited and nervous and I call Emily. We touched base every few hours and then headed to the hospital. I went from 3-7 cm in an hour and was thrilled to be progressing…but then I got a little stuck. Doctor came in and was unhappy with my lack of progress after 3 hours and started discussing c-section. She left the room and I burst into tears. Emily sat me down and explained that everything that was happening was normal that that likely my body just needed more time to progress. We strategized alternative ideas to c-section, including a small dose of pitocin. She was a peaceful, calming presence and I was able to put to panic to rest and prepare to welcome my baby into the world. Three hours later my daughter was born. A doula made ALL the difference in my birth experience. I was able to bring my baby into the world completely unmedicated and I was up walking around within hours of delivering. It was an incredibly healing experience after my emergency c-section. Just HIRE the DOULA.
