THI’ve always preferred a chamfer finish for my full coverage crown preparations. It works well with zirconia, metal, and lithium disilicate (LiDiSi) crowns. However, when it comes to PFM crowns, a chamfer alone may be insufficient, as they typically require a shoulder margin for optimal porcelain and metal thickness cervically.
To balance strength with conservation, I usually modify the crown design—opting for a PFM with a 360-degree metal collar. This approach allows me to preserve more tooth structure cervically while still achieving a reliable ferrule effect.
Alternatively, vertical preparations (verti-preps) can be a great option when the goal is to conserve cervical tooth structure, especially in cases where minimal reduction is key.

PRSTEP-BY-STEP PREPARATION for milled CAD/CAM ceramic crowns...
The internally rounded shoulder is still the standard preparation margin in our courses…Repetition never hurts! I know this is BASIC, but I often see basic rules not followed, so here you go...
People always ask: „HOW MUCH TOOTH REDUCTION?“
Well, that depends on the TYPE OF CERAMIC you want to use! Follow manufacturers instruction for minimum required thickness!
It also depends on your (digital) WAX UP: what is the intended final shape/position of the tooth? And consider the abutment tooth color (based again on ceramic type)! DARKER TOOTH may require thicker ceramic and DEEPER PREP!
ROUND AND SMOOTHEN the preparation for better FIT and STRENGTH!
As mentioned in last post, the milling bur is NOT be able to mill very sharp corners (dependent on milling bur size and sharpness), which may lead to VOIDS and compromised fit (and possibly areas that are TOO THIN).

1️⃣Clearance: Create a minimum of 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm of space, or clearance, to accommodate the crown’s thickness.
2️⃣ Incisal Reduction: Reduce the incisal edge by 1.8 mm to 2.0 mm.
3️⃣Gingival Margin: Create a continuous circumferential chamfer with a gingival reduction of at least 0.5 mm.
4️⃣Preparation Angle: Aim for a 5-10° horizontal and vertical angle for the preparation.
5️⃣Lingual Concavity: Shape the lingual (tongue-side) surface into a concave form.
6️⃣Rounded Edges: Use a diamond bur to round the incisal edges.
7️⃣Rounded Concave Lingual Surface: Ensure the lingual surface has a rounded, concave shape.
