Out of 2–3,000 species of wasps and bees in NZ, only five invasive species cause most of the trouble. And they’re very good at it. Most of the wasps in Aotearoa are native, solitary, and harmless. Many resemble ants more than the bright black and yellow wasps most are familiar with. They also don’t create paper nests- If you ever see a bright black and yellow wasp or a wasp nest, know that this is an introduced species. Because they face few predators and milder winters here, their populations can explode. New Zealand now has some of the highest densities of social wasps in the world. These invasive wasps compete directly with native birds for nectar and insects, can decimate native insect populations, and have even been known to attack chicks. If you're in a public space or a park, report it to your local council. If you're at Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne or a different ecosanctuary, tell the staff! If the wasps are on your property, we recommend contacting pest experts instead. Videos/Photos by: iNaturalist Georgia Stewart Scott Langdale DOC Eeva-Katri Kumpala

Out here in Nundle State Forest, it’s been a great season - plenty of growth, strong eucalyptus flow, and an abundance of natural pollen sources for the bees to feed on 🐝🌳 We’re making the most of it. This is when we build strength in the colonies - boosting nutrition, providing extra feed where needed, and treating for varroa to set them up for the colder months ahead. Doing the work now means healthier bees through winter, and strong colonies ready for pollination season come August/September 🌼 Healthy bees → better pollination → better food security 💪

Right now, European Wasps are reaching their peak season, but as they can fly half a kilometre away in search for sugary and protein-rich food, you may not be able to locate the nest on your client’s property 🏘️🐝 This is where the Vespex remote baiting and trapping system comes in handy. Vespex European Wasp Lure is a specially formulated, non-toxic liquid lure which is attractive to European Wasps, but not to bees. Apply Vespex European Wasp Lure inside the Vespex Wasp Baiting Kit or the Vespex Dominator Bottle Trap which can be used for both baiting and trapping. For remote baiting, mix the lure with Ensnare Pro 50SC Insecticide which is powered by 50 g/L indoxacarb. For ideal placement of these baits/traps, make sure you identify the European wasps’ flight path and place the trap along their path about 8-20 metres away from where they’re feeding for the best results. Globe Pest Solutions has all the supplies you need to tackle European Wasps this season so shop online at https://globepestsolutions.com.au/insect-control?problem_solver=496 or visit your local branch to gear up now! The European Wasp is not the type of insect you want in your garden. They are aggressive and can sting multiple times. @envirosafeaus European Wasp trap is an effective way of keeping them under control. It’s non toxic and doesn’t attract bees. You can grab them Bunnings, Mitre 10 and leading hardware stores. 👌🏽

🚨 European Wasps in Adelaide – Aggressive & Dangerous This Season European wasps are taking over Adelaide backyards right now – and they’re not like our native wasps. These invasive pests are highly aggressive, attack in swarms, and are strongly attracted to BBQs, sweet drinks, meat, pet food, and outdoor dining. One sting hurts, multiple can be dangerous – especially for children, pets, and anyone with allergies. In Adelaide’s warm climate, colonies explode through summer. A single queen can build a nest with tens of thousands of wasps — and DIY sprays or killing individuals only makes it worse (workers return angrier, nests grow hidden in walls, roofs, trees, or sheds). House Care Pest Control – your local Adelaide expert – handles European wasp control safely and effectively: * Same-day service across North East Adelaide * Targeted nest removal – we find and eliminate the colony, not just treat symptoms * Family & pet-safe methods – no unnecessary harsh chemicals * Prevention advice to stop re-infestation * Direct technician – no call centres, Werner personally handles your job * Trusted by 210+ 5-star Adelaide families If you’re seeing increased wasp activity around food, multiple wasps in the garden, or suspect a nest – don’t wait. European wasps don’t back down. 📞 Call or text Werner now for same-day help: +61 457 601 995 🌐 www.hcpestcontrol.com.au We cover: Tea Tree Gully, St Agnes, Modbury, Golden Grove, Salisbury, Paradise, Athelstone, Wynn Vale, Surrey Downs, Banksia Park, Hope Valley, Dernancourt & North East Adelaide. Introduced wasps are putting serious pressure on some of our native ecosystems. In South Island beech forests, species like the German wasp and common wasp can reach extremely high numbers. They feed heavily on honeydew - a key food source for native birds, lizards and insects - reducing what’s available for everything else. So how do you control something that’s spread across a landscape and hard to find? That’s where Vespex comes in. Vespex bait stations (the yellow containers you’ll sometimes see in the bush) use a protein-based bait that wasps are actively searching for in late summer and autumn, when their colonies shift from sugar to protein to feed their young. Worker wasps collect the bait and carry it back to the nest. There, it’s fed through the colony - including to the larvae and eventually the queen - which leads to the collapse of the nest. The key advantage? You don’t need to locate every nest. The wasps do that for you. Used correctly, this approach can significantly reduce numbers of these introduced wasps across large areas, helping protect the wider ecosystem. #waspcontrol #conservation #vespex

After another warm weekend it’s time to get out another @envirosafeaus European wasp trap. It might be Autumn but these guys are still out and about. The traps are super easy to set up and effective at trapping the European wasp before they sting. Go check out my last post for how I set these traps up and the science behind the trap. #envirosafe #europeanwasp
