When I went into spontaneous labour with my twins, 18 weeks early, I was told they were “non-viable” and the recommended option was no intervention at all.
I begged for a chance, just for them to try.
And they did.
For that I am forever grateful 💜💙
In the UK, NHS guidelines consider 24 weeks as the point of legal viability, meaning it’s the threshold where full resuscitation and intensive care are routinely offered to premature babies.
However, at 22 weeks -
• Active treatment is not routinely offered as survival rates are low and risks of disability are high.
• Parental wishes are considered - if parents request full intervention and the baby shows signs of life at birth, doctors may provide resuscitation.
• Decisions are typically made on a case-by-case basis, involving neonatal and obstetric teams and the family.
