This effect is called Mechanical resonance.
Instead of the energy fading away, each vibration adds to the previous one. The motion grows larger and larger with every cycle, causing the structure to shake more intensely until the stress becomes too much.
Every structure—bridges, buildings, machines, even metal beams—has a natural frequency it prefers to vibrate at. If an external force hits that exact rhythm, even a small repeating force can create powerful oscillations.
That’s why engineers carefully design structures to avoid resonance from sources like wind, traffic, or machinery. Sometimes, the right rhythm can do more damage than a much stronger force applied randomly.
