Buy second hand furniture and accessories, adding vintage pieces to each room will ground the space, add instant character, charm and warmth and make your space unique to you. It also helps introduce a familiar thread through out the home (the red thread)
Mix the old styles with the new like an old characterful dining table with modern chairs
Mix your fabrics, textures, and patterns velvet for me always helps create a cosy feel, add in florals or a classic pinstripe if you're not a fan of busy patterns
