Antonio Vivaldi – The Four Seasons, Op. 8, Chloe Chua Vivaldi’s concerto demands clarity, stamina, and constant control. At this age, simply standing at the center of such a work is already unusual. Performing it from memory, surrounded by a full orchestra, turns it into something else. For a few minutes, it feels almost unreal that the entire stage is held by someone so young. 🌩️🎻 Antonio Vivaldi — L’Estate (Summer), Op. 8 No. 2, RV 315 — 3rd Mov. Presto Kristīne Balanas (violin) & Margarita Balanas (cello) 🎻🎶 @margaritabalanas @kristinebalanas • This performance is an encore. Kristīne and Margarita Balanas had just played Brahms’ Double Concerto with the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra at L’Auditori, and returned to the stage alone — no orchestra, no conductor — to play an arrangement that only they have. They took a piece written for solo violin and string orchestra and fit it all into two instruments. The result has an energy that no studio recording can reproduce. • The sisters were born in Dobele, a small town in Latvia, into a family with no connection to classical music. They grew up singing rock with their father, listening to the Beatles and Janet Jackson. They started playing in public squares, and the coins they collected paid for their first instruments and the move to Riga. Kristīne graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in London and plays an Italian violin from 1787. Margarita studied at the same institution, was mentored by the legendary Lynn Harrell, and is now assistant conductor to Paavo Järvi at the Tonhalle in Zurich. The cello she plays is 177 years old and is the same one on which Saint-Saëns premiered his Concerto No. 1 in 1873. • When the two play together, something emerges that can’t be taught at a conservatory. It’s the complicity of those who’ve shared a stage since before they knew what a stage was. In this encore, the protocol of the formal concert disappears, and what remains is the same energy from the squares of Dobele — only now inside one of the finest halls in Europe. The glances they exchange mid-Vivaldi aren’t rehearsed; they’re the reflex of a lifetime playing side by side. • 👉 Follow for the best of classical music, daily in your feed. • • • #vivaldi #violin #cello #classicalmusic

In this legendary rendition, Maestro Kazuhito Yamashita joins forces with jazz-fusion pioneer Larry Coryell for a high-wire rendition of the “Winter” concerto from Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. Originally composed for the violin in 1725, Yamashita’s adaptation for the classical guitar is nothing short of insane. His articulation is super clean, especially as he ventures into the dusty territory past the 12th fret—an area notoriously difficult to navigate on a traditional guitar without a cutaway. And he tunes his guitar mid way too… Kazuhito Yamashita (1961-2026) is one of my favorite guitarists. He shocked the world in the early 1980s with his solo transcriptions of massive symphonic works like Pictures at an Exhibition and Dvořák’s New World Symphony. I was always a big fan of his Liszt transcriptions as well: he surpassed technical demands and produced such a thick sound I don’t know if we’ll ever witness that ever again. RIP Maestro, your legacy shall live at least through this account! Curated by @guitareheritage #kazuhitoyamashita #guitar #vivaldi #classicalguitar #classicalmusic

🎻❄️ Antonio Vivaldi — L'inverno (Winter), The Four Seasons, RV 297, Op. 8 No. 4 Cynthia Freivogel — baroque violin | Voices of Music 🎻 • In 1725, Vivaldi published twelve concertos in Amsterdam with a provocative title: "The Contest between Harmony and Invention." The first four came accompanied by sonnets — probably written by him — that served as scene-by-scene scripts. At the time, programmatic music was considered inferior by many theorists. Vivaldi wanted to prove otherwise: that describing nature with instruments could be as rigorous as any abstract form. Winter was his most radical answer — every bar has a written instruction in the score saying exactly what it represents. • Vivaldi died in Vienna in 1741, without money and without a patron. The emperor who would have protected him had died months earlier. His funeral was simple — there are accounts that there was no music. The scores disappeared. Throughout the entire Classical and Romantic periods, The Four Seasons didn't exist in the repertoire. Only in the 1920s, when manuscripts were found in a library in Turin, did the world rediscover what it had lost. A man who earned over 50,000 ducats in his lifetime — an enormous fortune — died destitute. • Cynthia Freivogel studied musicology at Yale before devoting herself to baroque violin. In this recording with Voices of Music — a San Francisco ensemble that became the most watched early music group on the planet, ahead of the Met Opera and the NY Philharmonic on YouTube — she plays on gut strings with a violin without a chin rest, balanced on the collarbone, held only by the left hand. Every fast passage is a balance between control and risk that simply doesn't exist on the modern violin. Vivaldi composed for this instrument, this bow, this sound. • 👉 Follow us, the best of classical music, daily in your feed. • • • #classicalmusic #vivaldi #violin #violinist

A. Vivaldi - Summer 🔥🎻 w/ NIKITA BESSONOV | Antonio Lucio Vivaldi was an Italian composer, virtuoso violinist and impresario of Baroque music. Regarded as one of the greatest Baroque composers, Vivaldi's influence during his lifetime was widespread across Europe, giving origin to many imitators and admirers. He pioneered many developments in orchestration, violin technique and programmatic music. He consolidated the emerging concerto form, especially the solo concerto, into a widely accepted and followed idiom #violin #classicalmusic #vivaldi #violinist #virtuoso

In 1725, Vivaldi published twelve concertos in Amsterdam under the deliberately provocative title "The Contest Between Harmony and Invention." The first four, what we now call The Four Seasons, arrived with sonnets attached, most likely written by Vivaldi himself. These weren't decorative program notes. They were bar-by-bar stage directions printed inside the score itself, telling performers what every passage was meant to represent. At a time when most theorists dismissed programmatic music as intellectually inferior to abstract forms, Vivaldi was making a serious philosophical argument. The story behind the score is just as extraordinary as the music. Vivaldi, who had earned a fortune exceeding 50,000 ducats during his lifetime, died in Vienna in 1741 completely destitute. His imperial patron had died just months before. Accounts suggest there was no music at his funeral. His manuscripts disappeared, and The Four Seasons effectively ceased to exist as a living part of the repertoire through the entire Classical and Romantic eras. It was only in the 1920s, when researchers discovered the handwritten manuscripts in a library in Turin, that the world understood what had been missing. Cynthia Freivogel studied musicology at Yale before committing fully to the baroque violin, and in this recording she performs on gut strings with no chin rest, violin resting on the collarbone and held in position by the left hand alone. That is not stylistic decoration. That is the instrument Vivaldi composed for, the bow he had in mind, the physical risk baked into every fast passage. Voices of Music, the San Francisco ensemble behind this recording, has become the most-watched early music group on YouTube, ahead of the Met Opera and the New York Philharmonic. They play Winter the way it was conceived, and the difference is audible. 🌩️🎻 Antonio Vivaldi — L’Estate (Verano), Op. 8 No. 2, RV 315 — 3er Mov.
