DDThe Voice of the People Party (VPP) on Wednesday held a public rally at Motphran, drawing a large gathering as it sought to mobilise support for its eight-point charter of demands against the NPP-led MDA 2.0 government.
Addressing the crowd, VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit rejected allegations that the party had politicised the Lumpongdeng issue, asserting that its involvement stemmed from concern for public safety during protests led by the Green-Tech Foundation Meghalaya.
He said the party stepped in to support protesters, particularly youths who had undertaken extreme measures, and to prevent any potential loss of lives. He maintained that the credit for the movement belongs to the Foundation, while criticising attempts to portray VPP’s role as opportunistic.
The rally also highlighted key demands, including exemption for long-serving teachers from clearing the Meghalaya Teacher Eligibility Test (MTET) late in their careers and the withdrawal of the Meghalaya Private College Act, 2025, which the party said threatens the autonomy of grant-in-aid institutions.
Other issues raised included concerns affecting youth, residents in border areas, and economically weaker sections, particularly in relation to land and livelihood.
On the reservation policy, Basaiawmoit said the party is examining legal options and may approach the courts, while reaffirming its commitment to press the government for reforms.
