Walkability matters. Public transit matters. Mental health matters. Your outside environment matters. When we take a look at car-centric infrastructure, it naturally de-prioritizes walking, biking, and public transit in total. I don’t hate cars. I hate what cars have done to society. We’ve made them a necessity instead of a luxury. Arguably, this is the biggest problem in the United States that we face today. With changes to our zoning, parking minimums, and infrastructure, we can have a healthier, happier environment for our kids to share one day—but nobody wants to talk about that. #Walkability #PublicTransit #MentalHealth #CarCentric #ZoningReform

I don’t often feature downtown infrastructure unless it really does a solid job in honoring various modes with ACTUAL infrastructure. As you will see with most of my videos, once you start going out of downtown core areas - across the U.S. - infrastructure for all who move outside of cars disappears or is extremely dangerous/inaccessible. Not everyone can afford to live downtown. Millions of people can’t (or choose not to) drive. Many practical destinations exist well beyond downtown (grocery, hospitals, clinics, public housing, libraries, schools). We need infrastructure like this where ALL people live, work, shop, and go to school. 🎙️ In Massachusetts? Like y'all do realize that the 15 minute city already exists in the United States, right? It's not a new scary concept. At its root, it's about bringing convenience closer to where you live. Bringing services, amenities, etc. to your neighborhood so that every time you want to do something, you do not HAVE to get in the car, however, you can still choose to, if you so please. In the last five years, I've lived in a few "15 minute cities" and loved each one. . . . #15minutecities #walkability #walkablecities #walkable #15minutecity

Zoning laws in the U.S. often separate land uses and prioritize cars, leading to low-density areas with long unwalkable distances between destinations. Reforming these laws to support mixed-use, walkable neighborhoods can make our streets friendlier for pedestrians and more sustainable! 🚶‍♂️🏙️ #urbanplanning #walkability #unwalkable #walkablecities #publictransportation #sustainability #cardependency

What do you want to see happen along Troost? I have a lot of feelings that don’t fit in a one minute video, but mostly I imagine that more residents, more feet on the ground, more community here would go a long way in undoing the damage that redlining caused. #kcmo #walkability #urbanism #architecture #midwest

Neckdowns (curb extensions) are built to make intersections safer. Here’s what they actually do: • Shorten crossing distance for pedestrians • Improve visibility between drivers and people in crosswalks • Prevent park cars from parking close to the intersection • Naturally calm traffic before crosswalks and create slower turns They might feel tighter when you’re driving and that’s the point. Slower speeds and shorter crossings mean safer streets, especially in school zones. #Urbanism #saferstreets #trafficcalming #walkability #urbanplanning

In a typical year, the U.S. produces 375–420 million tons of asphalt. But do we actually need all that? Neckdowns are a traffic-calming tool that slow cars, make intersections safer, and create more delightful space for people outside of cars. And every fall or snowfall, nature shows us where they belong. Leaves and snow reveal all the unused or under-used asphalt on our streets — sometimes called leafdowns and snowdowns. It’s visual, qualitative data… and a reminder that our streets can be redesigned for people, not just cars. #urbanism #tacticalurbanism #strongtowns #walkability #saferstreets #urbanplanning #publicspace #trafficcalming
