SHEven though this song won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 at The Dome in Brighton, England, making ABBA the first Swedish act to ever take home the trophy, the British jury awarded the song zero points. ABBA member and songwriter Björn Ulvaeus speculated that the British jury was trying to vote tactically to help their own entrant, Olivia Newton-John, win. Juror Basil Herwald stated that the jury heard the song in Swedish during rehearsals and only heard the English version on the night, ultimately preferring the Italian entry. “Waterloo” went on to reach Number 1 in the UK and several European countries, and the Top 10 in the US, Australia, and Canada, establishing them as global stars.
