Instead of giving us a precise location for a particle, the equation describes a wave function a mathematical representation of where a particle is most likely to show up when we measure it. The "Hamiltonian" part of the concept provides a set of instructions that take into account the particle's energy and environment. The resulting energy levels, shown as n = 1, 2, 3 in the image, demonstrate that subatomic particles can only exist at specific, "quantized" levels instead of moving smoothly between them.
