Let me introduce you to the weevil. Weevils are herbivorous beetles 🪲 often found in dry foods including nuts, seeds, cereals and grains. Many are found in homes during the summer and early autumn months. They are not harmful, and don’t carry any diseases…and you may have eaten a few in your life. I first learnt about their existence a few months after I moved in with my husband. They crawled out of my kitchen and formed a marching line all the way through my living room. I came home after work and was like 😳 However, this video was taken in a grocery store in HK. What you need to know: 1. There are times you will see them like this, so please check your pasta before you buy it…and there are many times you won’t be able to see them. This is because female weevils have a tendency to dig into the grains or wheat kernels, lay her eggs and seal it up 😱 2. Weevil eggs are so tiny that often times they survive the milling process, and that’s why you still see them in processed flour/pasta/rice. 3. Rice weevils have a tendency to fly, so they are considered the most destructive. How do you deal with them: 1. Even if you store your perfect grains in air-tight containers, weevils can still appear. Room temperature + humidity helps them hatch (about 30C and 70-86% humidity) This is why HK weather is considered perfect for these little guys. 2. The best way to keep destruct the eggs and prevent them from hatching, is to keep your grains in the freezer. Some articles recommend up to 3 days, but I say why not simply leave it in there. Your grains won’t freeze, and you can use them how you would normally use them. 3. Realistically, you cannot transfer your entire dry pantry to the freezer. So, a trick I’ve tried and tested is to add whole spices like cloves and cinnamon to your grains in the air-tight containers that you store them in. This way, the herb scent repels the bugs. 4. Buy smaller quantities of your grains so you don’t store them for too long. Storing them for too long leads to weevils coming about. You’ll end up having to chuck your grains out. #weevils #pantry #kitchen #beetles #cleanliving #kitchenhacks #homehacks #pasta #grains
