Wildlife officials will often intentionally cut holes in whale carcasses in order to ventilate them. Prolonged gas build up from decomposition can cause whale carcasses to literally explode. Freeing up some of these gases helps to prevent a large, definently stinky, and potentially dangerous explosion.

When a whale dies, it often floats on the ocean surface because gases from decomposition build up inside the body, making it buoyant like a balloon. This floating stage gives sharks, fish, and seabirds in the upper ocean a chance to feed on it. How long this lasts can vary a lot based on things like water temperature, the whale's size, and how much scavenging happens, but it typically ranges from a few days to a couple of weeks. Warmer water speeds up the rotting process, so the floating might end sooner, while colder water can make it last longer.
Eventually, the gases escape - maybe through holes made by feeders or just natural bursting - and the carcass gets waterlogged or loses enough fatty blubber to become heavier than the water. That's when it starts sinking to the bottom. The actual drop to the deep ocean floor usually takes just 1 to 4 hours, depending on how deep the water is and the whale's condition. It's a pretty quick plunge because the increasing pressure as it goes down squeezes out any remaining air, making it sink faster.
For upper-ocean scavengers like sharks, their main feeding window is during that floating time - days or weeks - before the whale’s body is claimed by the deep ocean. Once it settles, it will provide a rich food source that supports waves of scavengers, from mobile foragers to bone-eating organisms.
