Cuneiform is one of the earliest systems of writing, developed by the ancient Sumerians of Mesopotamia around 3400 BC. The name “cuneiform” comes from the Latin word “cuneus,” meaning “wedge,” due to the wedge-shaped marks made by pressing a stylus into clay tablets. This writing system started as pictographs but evolved into abstract symbols representing sounds, words, or ideas. Cuneiform was initially used for record-keeping, such as tracking goods and resources, but it eventually expanded to include literature, legal codes, and administrative documents. It was employed by several cultures over thousands of years, including the Akkadians, Babylonians, Assyrians, and Hittites. The script was versatile, used to write in various languages, including Sumerian, Akkadian, and Hittite. It remained in use until the early centuries of the Common Era when alphabetic scripts became more prevalent. The deciphering of cuneiform in the 19th century was a monumental achievement in archaeology, opening up vast amounts of ancient knowledge and history. 🎥: @cuneiforming on X #reels #history #mystery #ancient #art #archaeology

Originating in what is now Iraq before 3200 BC, cuneiform script is, as far as we know, the oldest form of writing in the world. The recording of a spoken language, emerged from earlier recording systems at the end of the 4th Millennium BC. The first written language in Mesopotamia is called Sumerian. Most of early tablets come from the site of Uruk, in southern Mesopotamia, and it may have been here that this form of writing was invented. Cuneiform is one of the oldest forms of writing known. It means "wedge-shaped," because people wrote it using a reed stylus cut to make a wedge-shaped mark on a clay tablet. Letters enclosed in clay envelopes, as well as works of literature, such as the Epic of Gilgamesh have been found. Historical accounts have also come to light, as have huge libraries such as that belonging to Assyrian king, Ashurbanipal. Cuneiform writing was used to record a variety of information such as temple activities, business and trade. Cuneiform was also used to write stories, myths, and personal letters. The latest known example of cuneiform is an astronomical text from 75 CE. During its 3000-year history, cuneiform was used to write around 15 different languages including Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian, Assyrian, Elamite, Hittite, Urartian, and Old Persian. First developed by scribes as a book-keeping tool to keep track of bread and beer rations in ancient cities like Uruk (in south east of modern-day Iraq), system soon spread across Middle East and was used continuously for more than 3000 years, up until 1st Century AD. Cuneiform is not a language but a proper way of writing distinct from the alphabet. It doesn't have 'letters' – instead it uses between 600-1000 characters impressed on clay to spell words by dividing them up into syllables, like 'ca-at' for cat, or 'mu-zi-um' for museum. Other signs stood for whole words, like our '£' standing for pound sterling. 🎥 : Credit to the Owner © British Museum #archaeohistories #cuneiform #claytablets #reels #mesopotamia #history #facts #reel #ancienthistory #writing #britishmuseum

Pardon my cuneiform, I am still a beginner, and I thought what better way to practice than to write the name of my favourite Sumerian historical figure. Her tomb was a major discovery in the 1920s by Sir Charles Woolley, with many artifacts giving us an idea of Sumerian culture. It is the most lavishly decorated tomb found in Mesopotamia! Puabi is identified as "nin" or "eresh" on her official seal, a Sumerian word denoting a queen or a priestess. Puabi's seal does not place her in relation to any king or husband, possibly indicating that she ruled in her own right. #history #art

It’s not just epic works of literature and chronicles of boastful kings that survive from the ancient Near East. Inscribed into clay with a reed stylus, everyday documents like letters, receipts, and accounting spreadsheets, as well as important records like marriage certificates, title deeds, and international treaties, have all endured through the millennia, bringing to life the first half of written history. At Tyndale House, we’re working our way through a large number of these documents, written in Akkadian and other languages, from various sites whose histories and locations overlap with the periods and regions described in the Old Testament. Our goal is to record and analyse the names of all the people who appear in these sources. Perhaps surprisingly, names are important sources of historical information. The language and meaning of names can tell us about people’s cultural backgrounds or religious beliefs, for example. Understanding the changes in naming practices as populations migrate, gods rise and fall in popularity, and fashions shift in and out, can also help us answer questions like, do the names we see in the Bible fit in their historical and geographical context? We’ve got a long way to go on the project, but in the meantime we have the pleasure of reading many fascinating ancient documents like this one! اعداد تا ده خط میخی ◇◇◇ شمارش اعداد در این پیج منتشر میشود که میتوانید ببیند◇◇◇ اگر به زبان و کتیبه های هخامنشی علاقمندید این صفحه را دنبال کنید Old Persian #cuneiform uses distinct signs for the first ten numbers, all historically attested. The numeral 1 appears as a single vertical wedge, repeated up to 9; thus numbers 2–9 are simple groupings of that same mark. The sign for 10 is a separate symbol shaped like a cornered wedge cluster. These signs appear clearly in royal inscriptions such as #Behistun and #Persepolis. @altpersisch

🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️ 🇬🇧 The invention of writing dates back to about  3200 BC and belongs to the Sumerians, an ancient people of Mesopotamia. This invention sanctions the passage from prehistory to history. The introduction of writing made it possible to effectively manage issues of an administrative nature, such as the keeping of accounts, business management, as well as to pass on those traditions that until then had always been transmitted orally, with particular reference to the magical ones / religious. The most used support were the clay tablets made with materials readily available in the area. The tablets, still soft, were engraved with styles, that is thin reeds that were cut obliquely and that allowed the tablets to be drawn with remarkable precision. Once engraved, the tablets were dried in order to give them greater solidity. 🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️ 📹 Video via @opeerapat 🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️🔹️🔸️ #akkadian #cuneiform #cuneiforme #sumeri #mesopotamia #babilonia #claytablets #sumerian #babylonian #ancientworld #ancienthistory #archeology #history

. Cosa ne pensate? La conscevate? 😍 • 🇬🇧 Cuneiform writing is a writing system that was performed with a stylus, imprinting particular signs on the clay composed of short pyramidal and pointed incisions, which may resemble nails or wedges, from which the definition of cuneiform writing derives. . Originally the verse of writing was from right to left, but perhaps due to the passage of writing from stones to fresh clays, we moved to writing from left to right, probably in order not to erase the symbols already written with the fist. For this reason, translating a text or even just a word has never been easy without first identifying the period in which they were written. The vertical progression, on the other hand, always remained from top to bottom. . It is one of the earliest documented forms of writing in the Near East. . What do you think?
