HAHafren Forest gets a lot of hype, and rightly so, but one of the real joys of staying in Mid Wales is discovering just how many beautiful walks sit quietly nearby.
Today Bryn and I explored Bryntail Lead Mines, just a short distance from Hafren Forest and Hafren Forest Hideaway, set beneath the imposing Clywedog Dam. It’s one of those walks that stays with you, rich in history, woodland and atmosphere.
Wandering through the old mine ruins and climbing up through the woods, the landscape feels almost untouched. Thick green moss, ancient trees, rocky outcrops and winding paths surround you. It’s humbling to think that those who once worked the mines walked this same route every day.
The path leads you back towards the dam, solid, dramatic and quietly impressive. History, beauty and scale all rolled into one walk.
It’s also a lovely section of the Glyndŵr’s Way, and a reminder that while Hafren Forest may be the headline, Mid Wales walking offers so much more for those willing to explore.
