VITurtles are basically living time machines… but some of them look like they came from another planet.
The biggest one on Earth is the leatherback sea turtle. It can reach over 2 meters long and weigh more than 700 kg. You’ll find it cruising through the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans like a true ancient giant.
On the opposite side, the smallest is the speckled padloper tortoise from South Africa. Fully grown, it can fit in the palm of your hand. Tiny, quiet, almost invisible in the wild.
Then there’s the Mata Mata turtle from the Amazon in countries like Brazil and Peru. It doesn’t even look real. Its head looks like a piece of bark, and it literally disguises itself as part of the riverbed to ambush prey.
If we talk about colors, the painted turtle in North America looks like someone carefully brushed it with red and yellow lines. And in Myanmar, the Burmese star tortoise has one of the most hypnotic shell patterns you’ll ever see.
And one of the rarest? The Yangtze giant softshell turtle in China and Vietnam. There are only a few individuals left in the entire world. Seeing one is like witnessing the edge of extinction.
Slow, silent, and ancient… but each one with its own wild story.
