JA📍🦭 The Glen Beach Cliff Walk
Also known as the Wicklow Head Cliff Walk, this is a hidden gem in County Wicklow, offering dramatic sea views and a much quieter experience than the more famous Bray-to-Greystones path.
🚂 Getting There from Dublin
The walk starts at Glen Beach, just south of Wicklow Town (about 50km from Dublin).
🚗 By Car (Approx. 1 hour): Take the M11/N11 south. Take Exit 16 for Wicklow/Rathnew. Follow the R750 into Wicklow Town, drive through the town, and pass the entrance to the Wicklow Golf Club. The Glen Beach Car Park is located just after the golf club.
By Public Transport (Approx. 1.5 - 2 hours):
🚃 Train: Take the Commuter or Rosslare Europort train from Dublin Connolly or Pearse Station to Wicklow Station. It is a scenic 25-minute walk from the station through Wicklow Town to reach the trailhead.
🚍 Bus: Take the Bus Éireann 133 from Custom House Quay to Wicklow Town.
🕑 Opening Times
The Trail: There are no gates or official opening hours for the cliff walk itself; it is accessible 24/7
Safety Tip: It is highly recommended to only walk during daylight hours. The path is narrow and runs very close to exposed cliff edges with no handrails.
Car Park: The Glen Beach car park is public and generally accessible at all times, though it is best used during daylight.

📍Coon Beach, Lough Dann Co Wicklow
Sitting beneath the slopes of Scarr Mountain, Lough Dan is one of Wicklow’s most peaceful and underrated hikes. This beautiful glacial ribbon lake sits about 5 km north of Glendalough, but feels a worlds away from the crowds.
The route from Shinnagh Lane / Lough Dan House follows a farm lane and mountain trail down toward the lakeshore. Along the way you’ll pass open farmland, woodland and the remains of an old miner’s settlement before reaching the shores near the Inchavore River.
At the bottom you’ll find a small sandy lakeside spot often called Coon Beach, a perfect place to stop, take in the views, or hang a hammock if you’re travelling light.
🥾 Distance: approx. 4–5 km return from Lough Dan House
Time: 1–1.5 hours walking (longer if you stop at the beach)
Difficulty: Easy to moderate, mostly downhill on the way in, uphill on the return
Terrain: farm track, woodland trail, grassy fields and sometimes boggy ground
🚗 Parking
Parking is limited along Shinnagh Lane near Lough Dan House or further up near Ballinastoe. Always park respectfully and never block gates, farm access, or local homes.
⚠️ Access & land notice
The trail to the lake crosses private farmland, so access is allowed only as long as walkers respect the area.
To help keep this place open:

🚫 No camping or fires
🐕 Don’t bring the dog
🚜 Do not block gates or farm entrances
♻️ Take everything you bring home
Also note that farm gates may occasionally be closed, and access can change depending on land use. If a gate is closed or signs indicate restricted access, please respect it and turn back.
If treated with care, Lough Dan remains one of the most magical and quiet lake walks in Wicklow, a hidden corner of the mountains that should be enjoyed by those who respect it.

NAnow THAT was a sunday well spent ✨🥹⛰️
last summer, training for the full marathon left me with no other spare time for hiking days…so I plan on making up for that over the next while (before a potential next biiig goal later this year eeeeep) Lugnaquilla in Wicklow is one I know so well, we did it a lot as kids/teens as it’s close to home, but it’s definitely a long difficult one so be sure to start WELL prepped! I suggest using All Trails to keep on track 💋 took me about 4 hours, 13.5km 🫶
