In late spring, Japanese families fly giant carp windsocks called koinobori to celebrate Children’s Day on May 5th. Carp are unusual fish. Truthfully, they are not terribly attractive and are often seen as unwanted or even invasive, but, they are unique in that their *willingness to swim upstream* against current, and even through powerful waterfalls. For a fish, that is major impressive. Carp are the chosen symbol for the holiday because parents hope that their children will grow up spirited and willing to face adversity, much like these wonderful fish. I have known about the koinobori tradition for many years and always admired it, but never thought it was my tradition to take on...”WHO AM I TO BE RUNNING FISH KITES UP A FLAGPOLE?” I’d say in my brain to no one in particular...but given the chaos of this last few years, I’m in the mood to celebrate people willing to take on adversity. And I want my kids to value see this and value it as well. This started out as painting a few to hang off our porch this year, but you know...more is more. High five for the carp!!!

It’s almost Children’s Day. Time to put out the koinobori, Japan’s traditional carp-shaped windsocks that celebrate kids. Koinobori are flown in the hopes that children will grow up big and strong. The custom originates in an ancient legend of a carp that swam all the way to the gates of heaven, where it transformed into a dragon. Families used to fly large displays, but even with the cramped domiciles of modern Japan, the tradition is alive and well, with small sets available designed for balconies and narrow yards.
