Let’s talk about catkins shall we?! They’re a funny little wild food that I avoided harvesting properly for quite some time, because I didn’t really see the point 😅 They taste really bitter and fibrous off the tree (if you’re going to try them raw - I recommend the small, unopened ones, they will still be bitter BUT at least they’re crunchy and not so fibrous!). I also tried them pickled once and really didn’t enjoy them at all. And finally the nutrition information we had about them seemed super vague. 🤷‍♀️ HOWEVER, last year I was researching the benefits and effects of various pollens; and it turns out, pollen is amazing! ✨💛 It’s generally high in protein and mineral content and some pollens have specific medicinal properties (pine pollen for example contains phytoandrogens — a plant compounds structurally similar to testosterone that can support male vitality, energy, and hormonal balance 💪) So, while they’re aren’t really any specific studies on hazel catkins, I figured, they’re covered in wonderful pollen and they deserve a spot in my wild food larder, especially because they grow in the thousands! 🌱🌳 I think they’re best when they’re roasted (I put my trays into a preheated oven at 150C for 15 minutes) and then dehydrated (turn the oven all the way down and leave the door slightly ajar for a few hours or until the male flowers can easily be rubbed off the stems). They taste a little nutty and make a wonder sprinkle for granola or these sticky date bars! 😍 The tea has traditionally been made to fight off flus and colds (although other herbs are probably better suited for that purpose) and to support kidney function! It tastes nice! Sweet and again, a bit nutty! 🫖 When foraging hazel catkins, make sure you know your tree well: catkins appear before the leaves and in clusters, and you should only take a small proportion of a tree’s catkins so you don’t impact pollination or the following nut crop. Remember to pick on a sunny day and sprinkle as you go! 🥰 ☀️ #hazel #hazelcatkin #foraging

🌼When everything else is resting, this Witch Hazel puts on a striking show of golden yellow blooms with ribbon-like petals and sweet fragrance. 🌳When we first moved here and saw this tree, I assumed it was the American Witch Hazel which normally blooms in the fall unlike this one. So with more research I’ve narrowed it down to either the Chinese witch Hazel or Vernalis, both bloom in January to March. There are about 100 species in the witch hazel family (Hamamelidaceae) including deciduous shrubs and trees. (Source:arboretum.harvard.edu) 🌳This species is most likely the “Hamamelis vernalis” (Ozark Witch Hazel) which blooms in winter to early spring. Last year it bloomed in February. It can reach a height of 10 feet with a spread of up to 15 feet. The Chinese witch hazel is so similar to this one and hard to tell apart. 🌳Native witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) is generally hardy to USDA zones 3-8, while hybrid cultivars are hardy to zones 5-8. A more heat-tolerant hybrid, Hamamelis x intermedia 'Diane' is hardy in 5-9. There are also some dwarf cultivars available. ✅Below, you will find info on the American Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) which has many applications in the skincare industry. It is native to NE and SE of North America. 🌳The shrubs grow between 9 to 15 feet and trees from 20 to 30 feet tall. They thrive best in full sun or filtered shade in hot climates. Prefers acidic, loam and fertile soil, but will tolerant some alkalinity. 🌳Hamamelis virginiana is a source for making astringents such as those used in skincare products and other topical uses. Phytochemicals, essential oils and tannins are extracted from the bark, twigs or small branches. The tree parts can be soaked in alcohol or vinegar to make a tincture. This will take a few weeks to draw out the active constituents. It is said that the inner bark of the tree possesses the highest concentration of healing compounds. It is said that Native Americans use the twigs medicinally by boiling them to soothe insect bites, sore muscles, burns, wounds, and bruises. I mean, can you blame me? Look at those luscious locks!😆 I’ve been obsessed with weeping willows ever since the animated Pocahontas movie came out! Grandmother Willow was simply CAPTIVATING. My 5 year old self would love watching the willow tree’s hair billow in the breeze through the car window. I’ve always wanted to go up close but never got the chance. So adding it to my bucket list… MUST VISIT WEEPING WILLOW :) Have you visited a weeping willow up close?✨ #asecondofwhimsey #whimsical #romanticizeyourlife #weepingwillow #willowtree #grandmotherwillow #pocahontas #pov #povreels #childhoodmemories #magicinthemundane

Introducing February’s Wildlife Wonder: Contorted hazel (Corylus avellana 'Contorta') 🌸     From its catkins that help support the pollinator population during the harsh winter months, to its high energy nuts that provide a vital source of food and energy for someof our favourite garden creatures in autumn, @rhswisley Garden Manager and biodiversity specialist, Mark Tuson takes us through the benefits of this often overlooked plant.     Growing to around 6 metres tall, the twisted branches of contorted hazel add an interesting element to any garden. These plants are happiest in full sun or partial shade, growing best in moist but well-drained soil, especially chalky soils. Contorted hazels are also extremely hardy and require little to no pruning.     Tune in next month for next month’s Wildlife Wonder when we’ll be exploring the benefits to nature of primroses!      #RHSBringingNatureHome

Witch Hazel, or “Wiche” Hazel in Middle English, is the name given to this tree that means “bendy” or “pliable”. Witch Hazel is related to the Willow Tree, and like the Willow its branches can be made into dowsing rods to find the magical underground springs beneath us. You have probably heard of Witch Hazel being a key ingredient in toners due to its antimicrobial and antibacterial properties. Witch Hazel can be used to aid sensitive skin, scrapes and wounds, along with insect bites. Witch Hazel contains the energy of the sun, and can add to elemental magic when working with fire’s energies. Witch Hazel can help us to ignite our inner fires, the hearths within our core where our energy blazes. Witch Hazel can be used for spellwork of passion, attracting, stoking creative fires, manifestation - anything that needs a boost of fire power. Due to her natural properties Witch Hazel can also be used in rituals of healing and success work. #witchhazel #treemagic #herbmagic #folkmagic #greenwitch #herbwitch #folklore #witchesofinstagram
