When you’re heading out to watch the northern lights near Fairbanks, staying warm is everything. Here’s the layering system that keeps us outside long enough to actually enjoy the show: • Base layers @livehotchillys @smartwool • Mid layer @cotopaxi • Puffy pants @wearswoop • Puffy jacket @cotopaxi • Neck buff @happyak907 @turtlefur • Fleece beanie @tidewaterfleece • Bunny boots @alaskagearcompany Make sure to wear wool socks and bring gloves! Hand warmers are also very useful. Aurora tips for Fairbanks: • It can be -10° to -30°F at night ‼️ dress warmer than you think‼️ • The aurora comes and goes… patience is part of the experience • The best shows often happen after midnight • At @theoverlookalaska in Fox you can literally watch the sky from inside, which means when she shows up at 1am, you won’t miss it 👏 #ilovealaska #explorealaska #travelalaska #getreadywithme #fairbanksalaska

How we stayed warm in -10 F 🥶👇 Northern Finland is officially the coldest place we’ve ever been! For most of our trip, temps were between 5 to -10 °F, but we even experienced -20 °F one day. We spent so much time outside and although we needed less layers than this while hiking and snowboarding, we needed this full system most of the trip! We felt super prepared with this set up, but I would also highly recommend hand and toe warmers. - wool baselayers (I am wearing @woolxwool, Myles is wearing @smartwool and @rei) - Wool socks (@rei and @hollowsocks socks) - down puffy bibs (@cotopaxi) - down puffy jacket (@cotopaxi Fuego) - wool sweaters (both ours are @royal_robbins) - snow pants (mine is @halfdays , Myles is frilufts) - insulated jackets (mine is @halfdays, Myles is @cotopaxi) - merino wool gloves (both wearing @woolxwool) - snow gloves (mine are @stio) - @fubukiboots (these wool lined rubber boots are sooo warm) - wool buff and/or scarf - wool beanie (I knit mine and Myles is @zorali) What’s the coldest you’ve ever been? #outdoorgeartips #coldweatherlayering #howtolayerinthecold

The kind of socks you wear matter… Even the “healthy” wool socks might be hiding TOXIC secrets! 🧦 👉 Many wool socks (a typically non-toxic material) can be made up of more plastic than wool, instead using materials like polyester and nylon! 🤯 Here’s why that’s a problem: ❌ It’s a chemical soup for your feet since these synthetic fabrics are loaded with toxins linked to c@ncer, hormone disruption, and infertility. ❌ Wearing them on your feet creates a warm, humid environment that can increase toxin absorption. ❌ Many conventional and wool/synthetic blend socks contain PFAS (forever chemicals), which can harm nerve endings in your feet. ✅ The fix? 👉 Look for socks made from natural fibers like 100% organic cotton, 100% hemp, or 100% wool or even linen (sometimes they blend them together). When you do this, your feet (and body) will thank you! 🧵🦶 #Socks #Footwear #FootHealth #HealthHacks #NonToxicLiving

The Bald Miracle of the Steppes Aston was a wildlife researcher stationed in the frigid, rocky highlands of Central Asia. During a routine survey, he discovered a Pallas’s cat den that had been abandoned. Among the stones lay a tiny, shivering creature. Unlike its siblings, who were born with thick, protective fuzz, this kitten was completely hairless due to a rare genetic fluke. Its mother, sensing the kitten wouldn't survive the frost, had left it behind. Aston couldn't leave the "wrinkled grey bean" to the elements. He tucked the kitten inside his thermal jacket, feeling the faint, rapid heartbeat against his chest. He named him Pippin. The Long Winter The first few months were a battle against nature. Without a natural coat, Pippin’s survival depended entirely on Aston’s dedication: Custom Gear: Aston fashioned tiny sweaters out of wool socks to keep Pippin’s body temperature stable. Nutrition: He provided specialized formula, feeding the kitten every few hours by a wood-burning stove. Skin Care: To prevent the harsh, dry air from cracking Pippin's skin, Aston applied soothing balms usually reserved for his own frostbite. While Pallas’s cats are known for being grumpy and solitary, Pippin developed a unique bond with his "human radiator." He would perch on Aston’s shoulder, his bare skin warm against Aston’s neck, watching the snow fall outside the cabin window. The Transformation As spring arrived, a miracle occurred. What the mother cat hadn't realized was that Pippin wasn't "broken"—he was just a late bloomer. Slowly, patches of silver-grey fur began to sprout. By the time Pippin was a year old, he didn't just have fur; he had the most magnificent, densest coat Aston had ever seen. He transformed from a fragile, bald kitten into a stout, fluffy warrior with the iconic flat face and round pupils of his species. A Bitter-Sweet Goodbye Pippin was eventually too wild for a cabin. He began spending his days perched on the limestone cliffs behind the station, hunting pikas. One evening, Pippin looked back at Aston from a high ridge. He didn't meow; he simply gave a slow, golden-eyed blink—a sign of ultimate feline trust—before vanishing into the shadow

It’s been really cold here lately, so let’s talk winter layers!  This video shows what I would wear on a pretty cold day. The beauty of using layers is that I can remove layers as needed. If it's warmer out or I'm going to be pretty active, I might ditch the outer layer or mid layer. If the chances of getting wet are low, I'll skip my waterproof pants. It's a mix-and-match system! Here are the layers I have on. These layers would also apply to gear for kids. BASE LAYER: This is the layer closest to the body. It should fit snugly and is often made of wool or synthetic materials. It doesn't need to be thick, as its primary purpose is to wick away sweat from your skin. I also have wool socks here. MID LAYER: The next layer is to provide warmth! Here I'm wearing a fleece jacket and pajama bottoms. Anything that is warm and comfy would work for this layer, but maybe skip cotton if you're not going to be near a change of clothing. You can change the thickness of this layer depending on how cold it is. However, don't add a layer to your feet here - it's usually not a good idea to double up on socks. OUTER LAYER: This layer is to add waterproofing and to cover extremities. They might add warmth, too, depending on your needs. Here I have on rain pants (which only add waterproofing) and a winter coat (which adds both waterproofing and warmth). In addition, there are lots of footwear, hats, gloves, and scarf options you could add depending on how cold it is and if you need waterproofing. Hope this helps you to prepare for going outside in the cold! What questions do you have about winter layers? #wintergear #coldweather #layering #allthelayers #thecolddoesntbothermeanyway

I hate being cold, so I was nervous and anxious about visiting Canada in the winter. However, it really is true what they say…there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing! This is how this Arizona girl stayed warm in sub-freezing temperatures….I stuck to the 3-layer rule, starting with a moisture-wicking base layer, an insulated middle layer, and a waterproof/windproof outer layer. Here is everything that I wore: ✅ Thermal base layer: preferably wool, avoid cotton ✅ Fleece lined leggings and sweatshirt for insulation ✅ Wool socks ✅ Insulated waterproof boots ✅ Sheepskin/sherpa shoe inserts for added warmth ✅ Neck gaiter to cover my face in the wind ✅ Wool scarf ✅ Fleece lined beanie: the added layer of fleece really helps! ✅ Gloves/mittens: I ended up wearing tech gloves with insulated mittens on top so that I could still use my phone without my fingers freezing ✅ Hot Hands: These disposable hand warmers stay hot for up to 18 hours. I stuck them in my pockets and even mittens and they worked so well. ✅ I added snow pants as a waterproof/windproof outer layer for certain activities ✅ Long down parka: The last layer is the most important, and this @fitouchofficial parka (AD) was a lifesaver! Not only did I love the look, but the insulated down material kept me so warm during all of our outdoor adventures! #winterwear #fitouch #winterwardrobe #grwmoutfit #wintertravel

I don’t understand how this works. It’s 3°C. Wind. Rain. Sideways rain. And I’m outside looking like a human duvet. Meanwhile, the Dutch: • light jacket • regular sneakers • no hat • no drama Children? Same energy. Tiny humans riding bikes like it’s spring break. At this point I’m convinced: Either they are immune to cold Or I’m just dramatically Mediterranean inside. I’m fully wrapped in thermal layers, wool socks, scarf, second scarf, emergency scarf… And they’re casually saying: “It’s not that cold.” Not that cold?? My soul left my body 20 minutes ago. Tell me honestly — Is it adaptation? Genetics? Or secret Dutch winter training? 🇳🇱😂 #NetherlandsLife #DutchCulture #ExpatLife #LifeInHolland #CulturalDifferences

Winter layering is not fashion. It’s survival. ❄️ Here’s how I layer for extreme cold: Layer 1: Thermal base layer Your second skin. Keeps body heat in & moisture out. Layer 2: Fleece layer Adds insulation. Traps warmth without bulk. Layer 3: Down jacket Your shield against harsh wind & sub-zero temperatures. Extras that matter: • Fur / wool socks (cold feet = bad mood) • Fleece-lined gloves • Fleece beanie (you lose most heat through your head) • Shoes with strong grip (because snow + ice don’t care about your aesthetic) Layer smart. Travel warm. Move freely. Mountain girls don’t freeze.
