That high note still gives me chills The Oh, Happy Day performance in Sister Act 2 is pure cinematic joy. Ryan Toby, just sixteen at the time, hits an absurdly difficult high E-flat that most singers wouldn’t dare attempt and yet he is doing it like it’s nothing. What makes it even better is that the moment wasn’t revealed to the cast. The camera keeps on Whoopi Goldberg as she turns, stunned, and her reaction is completely real. The choir’s faces, the fellow nuns (including the late, great, wonderful Dame Maggie Smith), the room lifting, the sudden eruption of energy. It’s one of those rare movie moments that feels spontaneous, electric, and forever goosebump-inducing. Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993), directed by Bill Duke, may not have been a critics’ darling, but it’s a comfort film for so many. Pure serotonin. Alongside Whoopi, you’ve got a young Lauryn Hill giving a star-making performance, including one of my favourite teacher-student moments on screen. In an earlier scene, Whoopi pulls Lauryn aside, and her words still land every time: “If you wake up in the morning and you can’t think of anything but singing, then you should be a singer, girl.” It’s a film about talent, encouragement, finding your voice, and choosing the thing you love without apology. If you need warmth, joy, and a reminder of why music matters, this one always delivers – a perfect film to start your 2026. Having first encountered Sheryl Lee Ralph as a music-fearing mother in Sister Act 2, I would have never guessed that her origins lay in musical theatre. Let alone, that she was one of the original Dreams! She talent is undeniable and I am so surprised I’ve never highlighted her before today! Whether you love her from our theatre work, her film work or her TV success on shows like Abbott Elementary - she’s unforgettable! Shows: Dreamgirls / Thoroughly Modern Millie / Wicked Songs: “When I First Saw You” / “Only in New York” / “The Wizard and I” Sheryl Lee Ralph OJ (Hon.) is an American actress and singer. Known for her performances on stage and screen, she earned acclaim for her role as Deena Jones in the Broadway musical Dreamgirls (1981), for which she was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. Since 2021, she has starred as Barbara Howard on the ABC mockumentary sitcom Abbott Elementary, for which she won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2022, becoming the first Black woman in 35 years to win the award. Her other Broadway roles include Muzzy Van Hossmere in Thoroughly Modern Millie (2002) and Madame Morrible in Wicked (2016–2017) - a role for which she was historically the first black actress to take it on. Additionally, she has produced the Broadway plays Thoughts of a Colored Man (2021) and Ohio State Murders (2022). She made her film debut in the 1977 comedy A Piece of the Action. In 1991, she won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female for her performance in the 1990 comedy-drama film To Sleep with Anger. Ralph’s other notable roles include The Mighty Quinn (1989), Mistress (1992), The Distinguished Gentleman (1992), Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993), The Flintstones (1994) and The Comeback Trail (2020). Enjoy! What are your favorite Broadway memories of Sheryl Lee Ralph?!

I Will Follow Him - SISTER ACT 👑 The iconic “I Will Follow Him” finale in Sister Act (1992) is one of the film’s most unforgettable moments. Set inside a packed church during a visit from the Pope, the once-struggling choir—now transformed under Deloris’s direction—bursts into a joyful, gospel-infused rendition of the classic song. The scene blends comedy, soul, and pure celebration as the nuns dance, clap, and sing with infectious energy, while the stunned congregation and clergy watch in amazement. It’s the emotional payoff of the entire film, showcasing the choir’s growth, Deloris’s impact, and the unifying power of music. Sister Act became a global hit thanks to its feel-good story, sharp humour, and the magnetic charm of its star, Whoopi Goldberg, whose performance as Deloris Van Cartier/Sister Mary Clarence cemented her as a ’90s comedy icon. The film also features memorable supporting roles from Maggie Smith, Kathy Najimy, Wendy Makkena, and Mary Wickes. Its mix of comedy, music, and heart made it a cultural favourite, spawning a successful sequel, a long-running stage musical, and enduring popularity across generations. Even today, the movie remains a beloved comfort watch, with its musical scenes—especially “I Will Follow Him”—continuing to be celebrated and shared. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #SisterAct #IWillFollowHim #WhoopiGoldberg #90sMovies #MovieMagic #IconicScenes #FeelGoodFilms #MusicalMoments #CinemaClassics #NostalgiaVibes
