But once again hardworking public servants are feeling painful uncertainty because once again the Speaker shut the House down and is refusing to do his job.

SOFederal employees: here’s the clean update. The Senate passed the funding package 71–29 tonight. That’s a real step toward avoiding a shutdown, and it also sets up a separate DHS negotiation on enforcement guardrails. But we’re not done: the bill still has to clear the House, and the House isn’t back until Monday. That means we’re in a weekend window where uncertainty is higher than it should be. Don’t assume your status, don’t rely on rumors, and don’t make financial decisions based on headlines. Follow your agency’s official guidance, save any emails/notices, and I’ll post again as soon as we have a clear House plan. Let’s talk about fear.
Since early 2025, the federal government workforce has been living inside a level of uncertainty many people outside this space will never fully understand layoffs, restructuring, political pressure, nonstop headlines, and the quiet question many federal workers and federal employees are asking themselves:
“What happens next?”
And right now it’s not just federal employees feeling it.
The entire world feels heavy. Tense. Uncertain.
Fear is persuasive.
It can make you freeze.
It can make you doubt everything you’ve already proven you can do.
But fear only becomes powerful when it starts driving your decisions.
So today’s reset is simple:
Take a breath.
Reset your mind.
And remind yourself that uncertainty does not get to decide your future.
You don’t defeat fear by waiting for it to disappear.
You defeat fear by moving anyway.
Fear can ride in the car…
but it will never drive.

Right now many federal employees and federal workers are navigating layoffs, uncertainty, and major changes across the federal government.
And when everything feels unstable, it’s easy to assume the worst.
But sometimes the moment that interrupts your career path is the same moment that opens up a new one.
Your experience still has value.
Your skills still transfer.
Your career didn’t end.
This may simply be the moment to reassess your skills, reposition your experience, and start preparing for your next opportunity, whether that’s the private sector, contract work, consulting, or building something of your own.
Because sometimes different doesn’t mean worse.
Sometimes it means bigger than what you originally planned.

Dear #FiredFed,
First of all:
You are strong. You are important. You matter.
This staffing cut has nothing to do with your worth as a public servant or individual.
We see the hard work you put into this job. We see all the sacrifices you made to get here. The country is better off because of your service.
Second (and only read on if you are ready for some harrowing statistics):
Whether you were #RIFed, forced to take the #DRP, or otherwise involuntarily severed: the loss of your federal job will have a significant impact on you. It’s not just the loss of your income, your health insurance, and––in some cases––your home. There are real, tangible impacts that come with job loss:
☑️ Job loss can slash long-term earnings by up to 25% (Jacobson et al., 1993).
☑️ Unemployed workers have ~83% higher odds of developing new health problems in the 15-18 months following their layoff (Strully, 2009).
☑️ Unemployed individuals have over 2x the risk of clinical depression and show more distress than employed individuals (Dooley et al., 1994; Paul & Moser, 2009).
☑️ Long-term unemployment is associated with an increased suicide risk of 1.7x, and up to 2.5x within the first five years of unemployment (Milner et al., 2013).
We do not yet know how the mass federal layoffs will impact the workforce. We hope studies will come out in later years. In the meantime, we want you to know it is okay to struggle. But please do not feel completely hopeless or alone because there are hundreds of thousands of other #formerfeds who are going to stand alongside you.
