Teachers do not wake up in the morning thinking about politics. They wake up thinking about lesson plans, the student who is struggling to read, the one who hasn’t eaten, the one who just needs someone to believe in them. And yet here we are again. Another round of legislation aimed squarely at weakening the collective voice of the very people we trust with our children. Under bills like SB 1296, we are seeing continued efforts to burden employee organizations with new hurdles, new reporting requirements, and new threats of revocation. This is not about transparency. It is about power. Let’s be honest about one thing. Florida is a right-to-work state. That means every employee in a bargaining unit benefits from the union-negotiated contract whether they join the union or not. Salary schedules. Planning time. Health benefits. Due process protections. All of it. So when someone chooses not to join, they still receive the benefits. In states where contracts apply only to union members, participation rates are high. Because when people see the value and understand that benefits are tied to membership, they join. Not because they are forced. Because it works. Union contracts are not imposed from above. They are voted on by the bargaining unit, union members and non-members alike. Contracts are ratified by the employees themselves. If the majority of educators dislike a negotiated agreement, they can vote it down. That is democracy in action. The narrative that teachers are somehow trapped by unions ignores the simple truth: they choose them. And they retain the power to shape or reject what is negotiated on their behalf. Strong unions mean: • More competitive salaries • More stable staffing • Clear grievance procedures • A seat at the table when policies affect classrooms When educators have stability and voice, students benefit. That is not partisan. That is practical. As someone who believes deeply in strengthening public education, I will always stand with the professionals who make our schools run. Efforts to silence or weaken their collective voice do not strengthen schools. They destabilize them.

Fair compensation isn’t just about salary floors. Listen to faculty from the Expository Writing Program explain how salary compression and inversion make it so that faculty members with the most years of service often make less than their more recently hired colleagues. If you think professors’ experience should be reflected in their pay, vote YES on our strike authorization vote. Voting ends tomorrow.

🚨🚨TRUTH: Union dues don’t just fund representation. They’re often spent on political activism, lobbying, and causes many workers never agreed to support. For example, 90% of teachers’ union dues for political activity support Democrats. That’s not solidarity, it’s compulsion. Your paycheck shouldn’t bankroll someone else’s politics. Worker freedom means choice. 👏🏼👏🏼 ➡️➡️ Learn more: AFFT.org #righttowork #publicemployees #knowyourrights #unionaccountability
