🌟 Fantasy writers, we need to talk about emotional stakes 🌟 You’ve spent hours crafting intricate maps, designing magical systems, and inventing entire histories for your world—but is your reader feeling the stakes? No matter how breathtaking your worldbuilding is, readers won’t care about your world unless they care about your characters first. Here are the top 3 ways to balance the two: 🌍 1. Ground your worldbuilding in emotion Don’t just describe your kingdom’s looming war—show us what it means to your characters. What’s at risk for them? Their family, their dreams, their survival? EX: In Shadow and Bone, the looming threat of the Shadow Fold isn’t just a grand-scale problem—it puts Alina’s newfound powers, her relationships, and her identity to the ultimate test as she’s thrust into a conflict she barely understands. ❤️2. Give your characters deeply personal stakes Even in epic battles or massive conflicts, the emotional core should be clear. Readers connect through relationships, desires, and struggles—not just the grandeur of the plot. EX: In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry’s fight against Voldemort isn’t just about saving the wizarding world—it’s about protecting his friends, grappling with grief, and finding where he belongs. ⚖️ 3. Weave worldbuilding through your story Use actions, dialogue, and decisions to reveal your world. Don’t let info-dumps overshadow your characters’ journeys. EX: In A Court of Thorns and Roses, Feyre’s choices—like hunting in the woods or entering Tamlin’s court—naturally reveal Prythian’s dangerous beauty without long-winded explanations. 🌲 Your world can be as complex as Middle-earth or as magical as Narnia, but without emotional stakes, it’s just… scenery. 👉 Need help leveling up your storytelling? Tired of your fantasy dialogue sounding fake? It might be “Maid and Butler” syndrome—when characters talk only to explain the world to readers. 🙅‍♂️ In Chapter 9 of How to Write Better Worlds, we’re talking about how to embed exposition in a way that feels natural and lived-in. Hint: It’s all about conflict-first dialogue. #WorldbuildingTips #FantasyWriting #DialogueAdvice #AmWritingFantasy #WritersOfInstagram #WritingReels #AuthorTips #FantasySeries #IndieWriters #WritingCommunity

Too many indie writers build worlds that look good… but feel dead. If your readers are skimming lore dumps, falling asleep mid-scene, or saying “cool concept” but not finishing your story, this is why. In this reel, I break down the method I created that changed everything: Worldbuilding like it’s a character… with goals, flaws, secrets, contradictions. This keeps your story alive and emotionally sharp. If you’re writing fantasy, manga, or sci-fi and your world feels flat, this might be the fix. Save this for your next writing session ✍️ Drop a 🌍 if you want a full breakdown! #zezemaru #michaelmadlock #worldbuilding #fantasywriting #storytellingtips #indiewriters

Stuck on world building? Start here ⬇️ Yeah, that 98% thing was totally opinion based BUT this is true: most writers have trouble with world building. You’ve picked up those books—the ones where the setting is just a little too flimsy—and probably didn’t get very far. 😅 Let’s make sure your book is the OPPOSITE. This is where the concept of place comes into play that I learned in architecture school (and found crazy helpful for world building in my five novel-length manuscripts). 📝 It boils down to a checklist of three things you need for good world building: ✅ Natural Context Where are your characters? Mountains, desert, city…what do they see when they look out the window? ✅ Historical Context Most central conflicts are sparked by something in the past—is it a war? A group trying to keep the shaky peace? What’s the government like? Borrow from history if you have to, but make it believable. ✅ People Where did that historical event leave your people? Is there a caste system? Are they living in said setting because of that event? Now add personality. What’s weird/different to the reader but an every day thing to your characters? 🤨 Maybe it’s one wacky name that’s commonplace (because of said war’s hero). Maybe they’re really protective of stray cats or pigeons. Maybe they have a fourth meal every day. — NOW that checklist should be used both as steps that build off each other and a foundation for more. ✅ The landscape / history / people should give you threads to weave into your narrative, therefore propping up the plot (and your book overall). Now, that was a lot BUT I hope it gave you a nice platform to start from 🫶🏻 Questions? That’s what the comments are for. Comments? You know I love to yap. 🤭 Want to learn more writing advice AND info about my books with childish immortals and prophecies that take no prisoners? Of course you do. 3 Tips for Better World Building in D&D Every new Dungeon Master follows the same cycle. It starts with excitement and the desire to create an entire world for your players… and usually ends with the DM getting overwhelmed and never even playing or finishing the world and realizing the players aren’t nearly as excited about every tiny detail as you are. To be completely clear, this isn’t the only way to approach it! Characters can be made so many different ways. I don’t do this for every character (not even close) but I’ve found it to be a helpful way to think about character development. Let me know if this is helpful for you! And if you’ve got your own character building tips and tricks, share them in the comments! P.S. Worldbuilding Mistakes to Avoid (Part 1): If you’re building a world for a novel, screenplay, or any kind of story, the world shouldn’t just exist around the character. A lot of worlds are detailed, but disconnected. History, systems, beliefs - all solid - yet none of it actually makes the character’s goal harder. Try this as you revise: ask what already exists in your world that should be interfering. A rule. A past event. A belief people live by. A mystery everyone avoids. A threat that hasn’t fully surfaced yet. When something in the world actively gets in the way, worldbuilding stops being explanation and starts becoming story. #writersofinstagram #writingtips #storytelling #screenwriting #writingadvice
