Writing tip: Helpful Apps For Writers 👉 Save for later! . While you don’t need anything more than a pen and paper to be a writer, apps can help you to organise your ideas, get started with your novel, or stay on track. . MILANOTE | @milanoteapp Milanote is a tool for organising your creative projects. They have a desktop and mobile app, which are a great way to keep track of all the info you need about your world, characters, and plot. This is a great one if you’re quite visual and tend to save a lot of inspo on Pinterest, or if you miss the old days of using Polyvore collections to inspire your stories. . NOTION | @notionhq I’ve been going on about Notion for 500 years. I use it to organise my thoughts, track my progress, and see if I’m on target with my wordcount. You can find the writing template shown in the reel in my bio. This app is extremely customisable, and (somehow???) free. . WAVEMAKER | wavemaker.co.uk It’s like Scrivener but free. As it’s free, it does of course lack some of Scrivener’s features, but it provides a focused writing environment, autosync, writing cards, timelines, space for writing notes, and all sorts of good stuff. . OBSIDIAN | obsidian.md Obsidian is a really flexible way to store your information. If your story has a lot of content to remember (worldbuilding, family trees, complex interconnected plot threads, etc.) and you found that Notion wasn’t for you, this might be up your alley. It follows more of a graph-like structure, where all of your notes are interconnected. It’s also free for personal use. . (Not sponsored or affiliated in anyway!) 👉 Follow for more, & let’s write our novels together! Your life could be so much easier.. Listen, I get it. Scrivener is confusing. It’s not free. But the long term advantages of using it are by FAR worth it. Think about how much easier it is to use a computer than to write your novel by hand. The jump from Google docs to scrivener is similar. Once you make it you’re like ohhh — I get it now. A novel is full of so many complex moving pieces — characters and plot lines and subplots and themes and on and on. Your brain needs space to hold all of this! So instead of just throwing all of this stuff into one bag, organize it neatly so that you can actually keep track of it all. Comment SCRIVENERGUIDE if you want my free tutorial and cheat sheet. I’ll show you how to save your work to the cloud, use all of the best features, and compile your manuscript.

Top 4 tools for any beginning writer: • K. M. Weiland’s Outlining Your Novel and Structuring Your Novel workbooks. When I first started to really take writing seriously I used these resources to help me figure out my process for structuring, outlining, and plotting the entirety of a novel. The workbooks provided multiple different approaches for how to do this, and I was able to build my own personal way of outlining once I saw all the ways it could be done! •Dry erase boards. As a beginning writer I found that my thoughts and ideas were all over the place, so I’d brainstorm my ideas and write them all on a dry erase board, erasing them and adjusting as I saw fit. Something about being able to do this by hand – while also being able to easily erase – really helped. •Google Docs. Though I went through various different platforms (Microsoft Word, Pages, and Scrivener, to name a few), Google Docs has always been the most user-friendly for me, and makes formatting easy. Also, being able to create folders within folders within folders in Google Drive has also been deeply helpful. •Storymatic. This was a card game my family got me once I started to show a deep interest in writing again. Even though I no longer use it, the cards are filled with different scenes and character ideas! It’s a perfect place to start when you’re stuck in the middle of a chapter and are running out of motivation. Let me know if you end up using any of these, and what you think! #writing #incorrectquotes #wip #newwritersofinstagram #poetry #youngwritersclub #teenwriters #author #write #writercommunity #newwriters #booklover #artist #bookcandles #writercommunityofinstagram #futureauthor

Here’s an opinion I haven’t seen online: I tried Scrivener and I didn’t like it—but not for the reason you think. 👀 Lemme preface this with if you love it, great! As I always say on this page, you write the way that works best for you—not your favorite author, not a random influencer, YOU. Which is why, after seeing so many good things about Scrivener, I decided to try it out. 📝 First things first, they do offer a one-month trial period for the software, which I found really helpful! I downloaded that first and, after learning how to use it, I decided to buy it on Black Friday. For reference, it was somewhere between $40-50, which really isn’t bad for computer software. 🤷🏼‍♀️ After giving it about four total months, I ended up sticking to good ole’ Word. Why, you ask? Well, Scrivener was just too detailed for me. 😬 I LOVED the idea of arranging chapters like timeline place cards, but I spent more time trying to set those up *perfectly* than actually writing. I never quite cracked the right settings for the main writing part and found myself missing how simple it was in Word. 😅 What really didn’t click for me is the feature where you can open up to four documents at once. Normally I’ll open a completed draft on the left side of my computer and write on the right, and I was happy that I could do this all in Scrivener! But having both the old draft and my current one open at the same time made it reaaaally slow. In the end, I just never got comfortable with it and went back to Word. 🙃 BUT the last thing I want you to do is take my word for it (pun absolutely intended). Go download the trial and see if it works for you. 🫶🏻 Heck, a more detailed setup may be exactly what you need! As for me, I’ll stick to the familiar industry standard. That’s my hot take for the week. Go fuss at me in the comments, I beg you 😉 #hottake #scrivener #word #writingtools #writingsoftware #hottakes #forwriters #writersofinstagram #opinion #amwriting #author #wip

I love sharing cool resources for writers! ✨ xTiles is a free app where you can create a dashboard for your novel (or whatever else you’re working on). There’s also a paid subscription for a premium bundle. [ad] I’ve linked the site in my “writing” highlight (which you can find here —> @schoolofplot ) I think a lot of you will enjoy it’s drag-and-drop system. If you struggle with Notion, I genuinely recommend xTiles as an easy, intuitive alternative. You hardly ever see ads on this page (maybe 1 per year) and that’s because I’m never going to promote something I haven’t found useful. I use a lot of tools and software to make my writing easier, including: 1. Scrivener (for drafting, I like their project trackers and little folders) 2. Microsoft Word (for every draft until final because editing is the easiest for me) 3. ProWritingAid for some grammar and style corrections 4. Vellum for DIY formatting (the most amazing program omg) 5. Notion for organizing my series information and literally everything else in my publishing business and life 6. ACX for producing audiobooks 7. KDP for publishing ebooks and paperbacks directly through Amazon 8. IngramSpark for publishing and distributing everywhere else except Amazon There are more I use for other things (like Book Brush for designing marketing images, and different programs for YouTube and social media management, but these are my primary writing ones). Do you use any of these? #Bookstagram #writingreels #writingsoftware #writerthoughts #writer #writers #writerscommunity #writersconnection #writingsoftware #scrivener #prowritingaid

Okay, I'm going to say something controversial: If you're drafting a novel or memoir in Word or Google Docs, you're making your life harder than it needs to be. I'm not saying those are bad tools. But they're not BUILT for writers. They're built for... well, documents. Scrivener is different. It's built BY writers FOR writers. And once you switch, you literally can't go back. Here's why: ORGANIZATION THAT ACTUALLY WORKS: Everything lives in ONE PROJECT. Your chapters, research, character notes, outline—all accessible instantly. No hunting through 47 Google Docs folders. SNAPSHOTS & VERSIONS: Write a scene, want to try a different way? Take a snapshot. Rewrite. Hate it? One click back to the original. No more deleting things because you're afraid you won't get them back. COMPILE TO ANY FORMAT: One manuscript, infinite formats. Finish in Scrivener and click "Compile"—automatically formatted for Word, PDF, ebook, print. No manual reformatting. SPLIT SCREEN EDITING: Reference Chapter 2 while writing Chapter 8. Side-by-side view so you can check consistency and catch plot holes. Impossible in Word or Google Docs. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING: Scrivener THINKS like a writer. It understands that a manuscript is a complex project, not a document. Every feature is designed around how writers actually work: research → outlining → drafting → editing → submitting. You're not fighting the software. The software is working WITH you. Here's the thing: Most writers who switch to Scrivener say: "Why didn't I do this sooner?" Because once you have all your research in one place, your chapters organized, your scenes color-coded, your character notes instantly accessible... you can't imagine writing any other way. It's not just faster. It's CLEANER. Your whole process becomes smoother. And when your process is smooth, your WRITING is smoother. Ready to switch? ✨️Comment SWITCH and I'll send you my affiliate link. Scrivener has a free 30-day trial (no credit card required) so you can test it out. After 30 days, you'll wonder how you ever wrote in Word. Comment SWITCH and let's make your life easier 👇🏽 #scrivener #WritingTips #WritingCommunity

⚠️ This new tool changes EVERYthing… The number one mistake I see writers make: querying agents before their manuscript is *COMPLETELY* polished (aka, ready to hit bookstore shelves!) But how DOES one polish their own writing, when they’re so close to it? I’m not talking about fixing commas or semicolons — I’m talking about substantial, big picture changes. Up til now, this was very hard (or expensive) for writers to do on their own. So I was *thrilled* when I discovered ProWritingAid’s new Manuscript Analysis feature which provides an instant 10+ page critique on your full manuscript, for under $50 (!!) My mind was BLOWN when I tried it out. It analyzes: 📊Plot structure and pacing 👥Character development and arcs 💥Narrative tension and stakes 🛒Genre-specific expectations and comp suggestions (The report is generated with AI, but AI is not used to alter your writing and your writing is never used to train their model. Your intellectual property stays 100% yours. 🔒) Even better? ProWritingAid offers tons of FREE features to help polish your draft: 📝 Sticky sentences report 🔄 Overused words report 🗣️ Spelling + grammar check ✨Comment GETPWA for my guide to getting the most from this tool (the free version is *amazing*), plus a discount code for the Premium version!
