Dr. Charles Adler at Mayo Clinic spent 20+ years studying this. Team put electrodes on forearms of yip-affected golfers and unaffected golfers, made them putt.
Finding (2005, confirmed 2018): in affected golfers, wrist flexors and wrist extensors—muscles pulling hand in opposite directions—were firing simultaneously. Co-contraction.
It’s neurological condition called task-specific focal dystonia.

J9when I had the yips the worst part was playing catch, and not to put the blame on other people because once I took full responsibility I had the power to change, but…
having to be “perfect” in catch play, trying to aim it, or feeling as if you should just be able to hit them in the chest is the exact problem you’re facing
if you’re throwing partner critiques every missed throw, or openly says “yo why u throwing like that”
it’ll only put u in your head more
once we started throwing like athletes, moving around, catching, spinning, throwing — it was another ball game
one of my old coaches told me you don’t get paid to play catch, and that just took all the pressure off me to perform
the yips is a tough thing that I struggled with most of my high school days that developed through fear of failure
