The Stanton Street Shul (Congregation Bnai Jacob Anshe Brzezan), located at 180 Stanton Street on the Lower East Side, is a historic tenement-style synagogue built in 1913. Founded by immigrants from Brzeżany, Galicia, it is one of the few surviving synagogues of its kind in NYC, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

Construction: The shul was built in 1913 on a narrow 20-foot lot, designed by architect Louis Sheinart. It incorporated parts of existing 1840s structures, reflecting the "tenement synagogue" style common in the neighborhood at the time.
Structure: A three-story brick and stone building that features a basement beis midrash (study hall) and a main sanctuary, with a notably modest, intimate atmosphere.
Survival and Revival: The synagogue survived the decline of the Lower East Side Jewish community. In 2002, a contentious, high-profile legal dispute over the potential sale of the building to a non-Jewish entity was settled, leading to a revitalization of the congregation.
Present Day: It functions as a welcoming, modern Orthodox, and eclectic community that serves a diverse, intergenerational mix of members.
The shul is considered a living, "surrogate" for the hundreds of smaller, immigrant-founded shuls that have since been demolished or repurposed on the Lower East Side.
