NJHighlights from Dr. Sobieski‘s summer included the 30th birthday of her viola made by Hiroshi Iizuka whom she visited. As a special birthday gift her viola got a new stylish Gewa case! Dr. Sobieski also framed two of her instruments. Her NY Seidel viola from the mid 1800s and electric 5-string violin. Additionally she visited Forte3d - where her friend Mrs. Gonsky tested (and bought) a 3D printed cello. Lastly, she performed with the Orchestra of St. Peter’s by the Sea and saw Hauser (her favorite cellist after Mrs. Dokus 😉) in concert at Radio City Music hall! #hauser #radiocitymusichall #gewa #viola #forte3d #forte3dcello #stpetersbythesea #njsyo @americanviolasociety

BO🎻 Detailed Violin Practice Routine:
1. Tuning (30 seconds – 1 minute)
- Always start by tuning carefully even if it’s just a quick check.
- Make sure each string resonates cleanly; don’t rush through it!
2. Open Strings (3–5 minutes)
- Play each open string slowly using full bow strokes.
- Keeping the bow straight and parallel to the bridge.
- Maintain consistent bow speed and weight.
- Listening carefully for a full, resonant sound.
- This helps “wake up” the bow arm and settle your posture.
3. Schradieck Exercises (10–15 minutes)
- Start slow and even; speed is not important at the beginning.
- Bow hand: relaxed fingers, flexible wrist, solid tone.
- Left hand: Raise and drop fingers evenly from the same height, keep thumb soft and avoid squeezing the neck.
- Aim for even, clean, and ringing notes.
- Use a metronome if needed to keep rhythm steady; Gradually increase tempo as control improves.
4. Scales (15–30 minutes)
- Major and minor scales relevant to your level.
- Intonation: Listen carefully — small adjustments matter!
- Shifts: Slow down during shifts; feel and listen for accuracy.
- Bow divisions: Practice using whole bow, upper half, and lower half separately. Helps develop control and dynamic range.
- Rhythm: Always use a metronome to stay disciplined.
5. Arpeggios (15–30 minutes)
- Same focus areas as scales, plus smooth shifting between positions & clean string crossings.
- Think of arpeggios as building strength and flexibility for music.
6. Repertoire (Studies & Pieces)
- Beginners: 20–30 minutes is good.
- Higher levels: 1–2 hours depending on complexity.
- Smart practice tips:
◦ Divide and conquer: Work on small tricky sections, not whole pieces.
◦ Slow practice: Play difficult passages slowly to correct errors.
◦ Isolate problems: Find why something isn’t working (e.g., fingerings, shifting, bowing).
◦ Record yourself: Listen back to catch things you don’t hear while playing.
◦ Mental practice: Visualize fingerings, shifts, and bowings away from the instrument.

“Don’t just repeat — analyze, correct, and then repeat.”
