This limited collab runs from May 1 to May 15, inspired by the baddie SoCal Filipina Muay Thai World Champion @jackiebuntan! It honors Filipino flavors with every bite from the mozzarella cheese, sweet banana ketchup aioli, savory longanisa, tangy atchara, all stacked on a fresh pandesal bun by @gemmaebakeshop 🇵🇭⚡️. We also got the PS Burger, PS tater tots, and vanilla milkshake that hit the spot. Find it at @proudlyservingla in Long Beach, Hermosa Beach, and Redondo Beach! One time, a friend of my mom told her, “Gumaganda na si Asia! Pero mas maganda siguro siya kung maputi siya.” (“Asia is getting so pretty! But she would be even prettier if she was white.”) 😂 Unfortunately, colorism is a deeply rooted issue that runs all throughout Asia but it is *especially* pernicious in countries that were colonized by Europeans. Philippines was under Spanish rule for 333 years, followed by almost 50 years of American colonization. During the Spanish colonial period, colonizers imposed a racial hierarchy eerily similar to the one they established in the Americas—with Negritos (Black indigenous Southeast Asians) at the bottom, and white Spaniards born in Spain at the top. This hierarchy was further reinforced by white supremacist ideologies during the American era, entrenching colorism in Filipino society. It is the reason why skin whitening billboards are plastered all over the Philippines and why skin whitening is a multi billion dollar industry. It’s important to note, however, that colorism does not only pertain to beauty standards; it can affect one’s entire livelihood. Studies have shown that darker skinned people are more likely to be shot and killed extrajudicially by police, and are more likely to serve longer sentences in prison than their lighter skinned counterparts for the same crime. The darkness of one’s skin can even prevent them from getting certain jobs. Colorism is not just archaic and outdated—it’s violent. It’s a system built to uphold classism and white supremacy by devaluing darker skin, and it continues to shape everything from beauty standards to life outcomes. In 2016, I created the viral movement #MagandangMorenx to push back—to reclaim our narratives, to celebrate the full spectrum of Filipino beauty, and to challenge the colonial mentality that still lingers in our communities. This isn’t just about skin tone. It’s about power, survival, and self-worth. Colorism has no place in our future. It’s time we dismantle it, together.
