I amputated my leg 6 months ago 🔪🦵 (Spanish in caption! 🇲🇽) It feels like just yesterday, but it somehow also feels like I’ve always been legless. Day 1 was hard. I still had a spinal block and every little movement was scary and painful… but as soon as I was switched to oral meds, I felt a lot better. The first few weeks I focused on sim racing with an adaptive hand throttle and working out at CrossFit. I felt best when I was busy, because when I was at rest the phantom sensations would kick in. It’s REALLY weird to have a persistent itch on a foot that doesn’t exist!!! Want to know the crazy thing? I was back in my go-kart before I was cleared to get fitted for a prosthetic leg!! I drove at a national level race 5 weeks post amputation with my new hand throttle. It felt sooo good! I didn’t even mind the crash! Then, around the two month mark, I started getting fitted for my leg. That’s a whole process of its own, but I got to walk out of my very first appointment in what’s called a ‘temporary leg’. Skin issues became a thing as I adapted to having my leg in my socket all day long, and my incision kept spitting stitches and each time I’d have to take a ‘leg break’ for a few days to let those work their way out. That was frustrating, because I like to be on the move! I got pretty fast on my crutches though! If you’ve been around here a while you probably know what my big dream is. The number one thing I’m fighting for… is to be the first amputee Formula 1 driver!! So, no time to waste! At FIVE months post amputation I hobbled myself onto an airplane and got myself to ITALY, the karting capital of the world, so I could start the next phase of my career to race in the World Series Karting. This is the highest level of the sport, and where the majority of F1 drivers started out. I’m here to give the world the answer to the question: “Can a driver with one leg keep up with the fastest drivers in the world?” I already know the answer… but if you’re unsure, be sure to follow along so I can prove it!

On top of cars being modified for wheelchair accessibility they can also be modified for adaptive driving. There are different types of hand controls available, my set up is on the more intensive side. As you can see in the video I control the steering with the mini wheel and my left hand and the gas and brake with my right. To shift between park, drive and reverse I use a tone button that I activate with my head. The process I went through to get my license might vary from some people’s experience because I already had my license before my injury. For me the process started with an evaluation from an OT to certify that I would medically be safe to drive. She ran physical and cognitive testing. After I passed the in clinic evaluation I had an in car evaluation where we tested out different adaptations. Some things were not appropriate for me, some things were too difficult, we tried a bunch of things and settled on adaptations that would work for me. Next I did a series of driving lessons, practicing all of the essentials for the road. There weren’t many driving schools that offered adaptive lessons in my area so scheduling was definitely a challenge. I did quite a few lessons, but that will vary depending on your ability. As I said before I already had my license pre-injury so I didn’t have to take the written exam but I did have to take a road test. After passing the road test then you have to either add the adaptations to a current car or buy a new one and add the adaptations to that. I passed my driving test in February 2020, but I still don’t have a vehicle I can drive. Unfortunately, I sit too tall in the vehicle I currently have causing me to have a poor line of sight. We’re working on it though! As with most things accessibility related, accessible vans are not cheap and neither are the additional driving adaptations. I haven’t gone through the process of building one of these vans yet, but when I do I will keep you updated! #SpinalCordInjury #SCIawarenessMonth #AdaptiveDriving

In this reel I want to show you the way I have control of brake and gas with the right hand. Special equipment attached to pedals helps with comfortable and safe driving. Turning hand to right accelerates, pushing forwards breaks. Simply and genius 😃 ______________________________________ W tym reelsie chcę Wam pokazać, jak kontroluję hamulec i gaz prawą ręką. I’ve been re-learning the basics all over again these past few days - starting with the very first thing I was taught to do in the hospital. Using a slide board lets me get from one surface to another, when I can’t use my arms or prosthetics to stand like usual. This is how I’ve been getting into and out of my car right now! Fun fact: when I started trying to use this slide board all those years ago, right after my injuries, I needed 3 people with me to help. Back then, 3 nurses or physical therapists would be called in to help with a transfer each time - and it would take a really long time So even though I’m back to using this technique right now, it’s cool to see how in that way I’m so much stronger now Also, it’s so handy that my Chevy Equinox is adapted with hand controls so that I can drive - but, these hand controls can simply be turned off so that I can ride in the passenger seat and let someone else drive for now. 🙌🏻 #StefsDrive #adaptivedriving #adaptivetools #togetherletsdrive

Ever wondered how a disabled people drive? ♿️ 🚗 Check out these 9 different hand control options that I’ve tried and tested when I was looking for my new car! This is 9 of hundreds of options out there! ‼️FYI this isn’t a sponsored post - I’ve documented everything to share with you all as I know how daunting this process is, and there isn’t much information out there when deciding what options to go for. I’ve paid full price for all adaptations and my car too‼️ The prices onscreen are the subsidised prices for @motabilityscheme adaptations and are correct as of early 2025. Note, these are additional costs to the price of your car itself. Be sure to follow for part 3, where you can come with me to collect my new car, and part 4 might even show you which adaptations I went for 😉 As always, let me know if you’ve got any questions in the comments and be sure to share this post! I’d have loved to have known about all of these devices when I was newly disabled and unsure of my new way of living ❤️ #AdaptedCar #DisabledDriver #Motability #TravelBlogger #CarAdaptation #DisabledGirl #DisabledWoman #WheelchairGirl

🚗 All this week, Team Adaptdefy are sharing their best car hacks! From how they drive, to the top features that make life easier, to transferring in and out of their cars with a wheelchair, we’re showing you it all. First up, Mike kicks off the series and shows you how he drives as a paraplegic. Mike uses a push-pull hand control system, pull to accelerate, push to brake, giving him full control without having to use the foot pedals. Many disabled drivers use a steering ball, but Mike doesn’t need one. You’ll also notice his hand controls don’t include an indicator switch. 💬 What features help you drive more easily? Drop them in the comments below! ➡️ Hit follow, next up, Gem will be showing you how she drives, and the subtle differences in her setup. #Paraplegic #WheelchairUser #SpinalCordInjury #WheelchairLife #AdaptiveDriving #Adaptdefy
