At work, it can manifest in many ways, including over-apologizing and saying ‘sorry’ too much, appearing to agree with people when you actually disagree, avoiding any possibility of conflict, and undermining your efforts as a leader…
It could even lead you to procrastinate from doing things that could put you in a position of potential judgement or criticism…
Fascinatingly, an fMRI study from UCLA published in Science (2003) found that physical pain & the social pain that comes from disapproval and rejection from others have the same underlying processes in the brain (Eisenberger, Lieberman & Williams, 2003).
In short, judgement and criticism from others can hurt… a lot.
And like many things, this desire for validation often originates based on the earliest relationship with your parents.
But living a life defined by others’ perceptions is damaging. It’s damaging to your performance, your leadership and your happiness.
Instead of living life your based on what you THINK others want you to be, find out who you truly are, and be the best version of that.
