I’m often asked…do I ACTUALLY have to boil water for baby formula?
The truth is that YES, you should be *just in case*
Powdered formula has the potential to grow a bacteria called cronobacter. While it is unlikely, it is possible.
Cronobacter COULD harm your baby.
Here’s the good news:
There is a way to kill the bacteria
First 🚨 wash your hands before preparing formula 🚨
The whole 2022 shortage was due to infections from household items.
So if your baby is under 2 months, is immune compromised or was born prematurely (or anything causing your baby to have a weakened immune system), wash your hands and follow the steps:
💧Get water from a clean water source and bring it to a boil
💧Remove the water from heat, let it sit for around 5 minutes
💧Mix the desired amount of water with the powdered formula. The water must be AT LEAST 158 F/70 C to be hot enough to kill the bacteria.
💧Let the formula cool by putting the bottle in an ice bath, putting it in the fridge or letting it sit.
💧Test on your wrist before serving. It will be too hot to give to your baby right after mixing!
Here are some FAQ:
❓do I really HAVE to do it?
➡️ It’s truly up to you. Is it likely your baby might become infected? No. Is there still a chance if they hit the criteria? Potentially.
❓I use the baby Brezza. It does this for me, right?
➡️ NO! The BB does not hit the temperature of 158 F to kill the bacteria.
❓This is such a bad process. How can I make it easier?
➡️ Use a formula pitcher and do it once per day vs. before each feed. Put the prepared formula in the fridge for 24 hours OR use ready to feed formula.

Florida released their testing results of pesticides and heavy metals in certain baby formulas 1.9.26

They tested 24 infant formulas from 7 major brands. Thankfully pesticides were not found to exceed max daily limits but there were elevated levels of heavy metals including mercury, arsenic, and lead. Would have liked to have see aluminum including but great start!
Whether or not pediatricians are ready to discuss this concern, this is something parents should have the right to know so they can make the most informed decisions on what they feel is best for their child.

If you’re formula feeding, look for the bottled water with the little baby on the label. Italian water is naturally mineral rich (misspoke and said mineralized). The “baby water” is low in sodium.

CHThe food and drink giant Nestle has issued a worldwide recall of some of its baby formula products after concerns that they might contain a toxin which can cause nausea and vomiting.
Nestle said some specific batches of SMA infant and follow on formula were unsafe to be given to babies, although they stressed there had been no confirmed reports of any illness.
The company said the safety and wellbeing of babies was their “absolute priority”.
