We came to Bali for The Sunday Coast business trip and a family wedding… but our final days turned into a Bali flood travel nightmare 🌧️🌊 Last week, Mum slipped on wet villa tiles and broke her arm, ending up in emergency with a cast. A few days later, on the morning of her late-night flight home - she had a hospital appointment to remove the cast so she could fly without swelling. We booked a taxi early, completely unaware of what had happened overnight. Only once we were on the road did we realise: torrential storms had triggered flash flooding across Bali. Streets were underwater, huge sinkholes had opened, and buildings were collapsing. What was meant to be a “quick” 15-minute drive became 8 hours crawling through waist deep flood water and traffic, with the engine struggling and water rising around us. When we couldnt move any further, the Indonesian army escorted us by kayak through chest-deep floodwaters to reach the hospital… …and then the final shock: it was completely flooded and closed 🏥❌ Our story is nothing compared to the devastation locals are facing, but it was a shock end to our trip. 🌧️ Bali Weather Update | 14.12.2025 | Please Travel Smart After a night of heavy rain and thunderstorms, some areas experienced flash flooding this morning, worsened by limited drainage. Conditions are still cloudy with on-and-off rain, so here’s what travelers should know: ⚠️ Current situation Flooding reported in • Seminyak: Jalan Kunti II • Kuta: Jalan Campuhan, Legian • Denpasar: Jalan Kebo Iwa Selatan, Jalan Gunung Athena, Jalan Gunung Soputan + surrounding • Canggu: Strong rain overnight and some villas experienced minor flooding — please check your villas + exact location to avoid staying near rivers 🚗 Getting around • Use alternative routes where possible • If you’re heading to the airport, allow a lot of extra time +5h at least (better early than stuck) 🏨 Accommodation tips • If you’re coming to Bali soon, check directly with your hotel/villa about their current situation • Book flexible / free-cancellation options if possible 📍 Areas to consider • Some areas are more affected than others • From current info, Ubud and Uluwatu seem to be not impacted by the flood (only rainfall) 🛥️ Travel safety • Don’t panic — just travel thoughtfully • Avoid ferries or sea crossings if the weather looks uncertain • Avoid flood-prone areas and move to locations with higher elevation ☕ What to do • Opt for indoor activities (check out my last posts) • Weather is very on & off — yesterday we even had blue skies and sunshine. So stay flexible with your planning by having 1 outdoor and at least 1 indoor alternative activity! At one point I genuinely thought the building might crack. The pool is overflowing, the garden is waterlogged, and so much of Seminyak, Canggu, Kerobokan, Legian, Kuta, and Umalas is underwater. It was raw, intense, and honestly terrifying — a reminder that this island’s beauty comes with serious power. The condition of Ngurah Rai Airport during heavy rain accompanied by lightning occurred yesterday afternoon, December 14, around 3 to 5 PM. — According to CNN Indonesia: A total of 19 domestic and international flights to and from I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, Bali, were diverted or delayed due to extreme weather on Saturday (Dec 14). The flights were affected by heavy rain, which caused limited and reduced visibility on the airport runway. “This was done for flight safety reasons, given the heavy rainfall that resulted in minimum visibility,” said Ahmad Syaugi Shahab, General Manager of I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport. Syaugi stated that heavy rain occurred from midday until 5 PM local time. According to him, the limited visibility posed a risk to flights, so safety procedures were implemented. Syaugi reported that seven domestic and international flights bound for Bali were diverted to nearby airports. Specifically, flights from Makassar and Kupang were diverted to Juanda Airport in Surabaya, while flights from Yogyakarta and Jakarta were redirected to Lombok International Airport. “Meanwhile, three international flights were also diverted: one from Taipei landed in Surabaya, one from Pudong landed in Lombok, and another from Dubai was redirected to Singapore,” Syaugi explained. In addition, several flights departing from Bali were delayed due to the heavy rain.
