When your child is sad, bored, or frustrated, is your instinct to fix it right away? You're not alone. But the science suggests we need to teach something more powerful: distress tolerance. Instead of avoiding tough emotions, we can help our kids (and ourselves!) learn to deal with negative emotions with tools like the ACCEPTS strategy from dialectical behavior therapy: A = Activities – Distract yourself with something engaging like reading, drawing, or going for a walk. C = Contributing – Do something kind for someone else to shift the focus outward. C = Comparisons – Remind yourself of times you’ve handled hard things before, or that things could be worse. E = Emotions – Change your emotional channel by watching something funny or listening to music that lifts your mood. P = Pushing Away – Visualize gently setting the emotion aside if you’re not ready to deal with it just yet. T = Thoughts – Try thinking about something else like solving a math problem to interrupt your thoughts. S = Sensations – Use your senses—hold an ice cube, smell something soothing, or take a warm shower—to shift how you feel. These tools aren’t about pretending things are fine. They’re about finding safe, manageable ways to ride the waves of distressing emotions until they pass. Today is World Autism Awareness Day. 🌎 Autistic symptoms in teenagers looks very different than in younger children. When a child is younger, differences in development of speech or movement skills trigger parents to seek out evaluations and support. 👧🏽 However, teens who don’t have these speech or movement differences are often overlooked. It can be helpful to acknowledge the lesser known symptoms that may be exhibited in Autistic teens. 🙋🏾‍♀️ In my practice, I have noticed that children are often misdiagnosed when they have autism. The parents have been searching for answers and supports for years until they finally get a diagnosis. By that time, harsh and unwarranted behavior therapy has been implemented which may have led to trauma in these children and parents. It is important to educate future parents about signs and symptoms of neurodivergent behaviors. #worldautismday #autistic #autisticadult #autisticteen #autismacceptance

Young U.S. children are being prescribed ADHD medication too quickly, a new Stanford-led study found. Researchers found that many (42%) preschool-aged children diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) were put on medication within a month of diagnosis — often stimulants like Ritalin — despite guidelines recommending behavioral therapies as the first step. ADHD is marked by impulsive behavior and difficulty paying attention or sitting still — beyond the typical “high energy” of young kids. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises that kids ages 4 and 5 should try at least six months of behavior therapy before starting medication. This can include tools like visual schedules to help kids stay organized, or parent training programs that reward good behavior and ignore negative behavior. Stimulant medications cause more side effects in preschoolers than in older children because their bodies don’t yet fully metabolize the drugs. Side effects can include irritability, aggressiveness, and emotional problems. The study analyzed medical records from 2016 to 2023. About three-fourths of the 10,000 kids studied were boys. Doctors noted that limited access to behavioral therapy is a major factor — many communities simply don’t have specialists available, leaving pediatricians with little option but to reach for medication. One researcher put it bluntly: “Doctors tell us, ‘We don’t have anywhere to send these families for behavioral management training, so, weighing the benefits and risks, we think it’s better to give medication than not to offer any treatment at all.’”

If you tend to overthink & worry a lot, schedule “worry time.” I’m serious. Research shows that setting aside just 5-15 minutes a day to write down your worries called can reduce anxiety. It’s called ‘worry postponement’ or ‘stimulus control for worry.’ You’re not suppressing the thoughts; you’re containing them. When worries pop up later, remind yourself: “I’ll save this for worry time.” It’s a simple shift that creates space, clarity, and calm. P.S. Have you ever tried something like this? 📚Research: Dippel, A., Brosschot, J. F., & Verkuil, B. (2024). Effects of worry postponement on daily worry: A meta-analysis. Let’s clear this up once and for all. There is no study from Holland showing 72% of kids were “cured” of ADHD after cutting out gluten, dairy, corn, soy, dyes, and sweeteners-because that study doesn’t exist.   When people like Dr. Amen throw around words like “inflammation” or “brain damage” and then sell a fix, it’s not science-it’s marketing. And parents deserve better than fear and false hope.   Here’s what’s actually true: ➡️ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition rooted in brain wiring and chemistry-not food, nightlights, or Wi-Fi signals. ➡️That said, lifestyle and structure do make a difference. Predictability, sleep, movement, and steady routines help ADHD brains thrive. ➡️You don’t need a restrictive diet to “heal” ADHD. You need understanding, support, and strategies that meet your child where they are.   If you’re ready to go beyond the myths, my latest YouTube video dives into what really helps: behavior therapy, daily structure, school supports, and where medication fits in (and doesn’t).   Comment YOUTUBE LINK and I’ll send it your way-and don’t forget to subscribe to my channel so you never miss these deep dives. What’s been the most confusing ADHD “tip” or claim you’ve seen online?
