Com outras espécies de macacos, a porcentagem varia, mas ainda é alta. Essa proximidade genética explica por que temos estruturas corporais semelhantes, expressões faciais parecidas e até comportamentos sociais comparáveis, como cuidado parental, formação de grupos e uso de ferramentas. Mas atenção: genética parecida não significa que somos “iguais”. Pequenas diferenças no DNA são responsáveis por grandes mudanças no desenvolvimento do cérebro, linguagem, cultura e organização social. A evolução não criou uma linha reta — criou uma árvore. In 2014, researchers found bonobos failed the test while dogs and toddlers succeeded. Children around age 1 begin to understand pointing. Duke anthropologist Brian Hare said that’s when the foundations of language and culture begin to develop. Hare said he found it shocking that dogs passed the pointing test. “There was no evidence until the last decade that dogs were capable of inferential reasoning, absolutely not. So that’s what’s new, that’s what shocking is that of all the species, it’s dogs that are showing a couple of abilities that are really important that allow humans to develop culture and language,” Hare told 60 Minutes.
