MAHere’s what I wish I knew👇🏼
• Find what YOU like - Recommendations are great, don’t get me wrong. But at times I’ve gone all-in on a series that someone else had high praises for, but ended up not connecting with myself.
• You don’t NEED to pick up every book, EVERY WEEK - Before going to your LCS, take the time to research what’s coming out. Maybe nothing interests you. It’s okay to skip a week. Overall, have a plan on what you’re picking up before walking in. This will save you time and money.
• It’s not CHEAP - Comics aren’t just $3-4 anymore. Variants on card stock paper will incur a higher price, many issues are over-sized, and let’s not get started on collecting past key issues from other ages lol….Taking home 5 new comics per week will most likely mean spending ~$30 a week.
• But it DOESN’T need to be expensive - Check out some libraries in your neighborhood (you’d be surprised what they might have), shop used graphic novels/discounted comics online, at cons and used bookstores. You can definitely find those deals.
• You will FALL BEHIND - Don’t get overwhelmed. Comics will most likely stack up and you won’t get to everything right away. That’s okay. Try silencing notifications and setting aside reading and organizing time each day to help mitigate the pile up.
• Don’t be afraid to JUST START - Gatekeepers are the worst. Don’t feel intimidated starting a new series and getting to know new characters. Nobody has read everything, although some people may act like they have. Take your time. Enjoy the ride.
• Take a CHANCE - Branch out. Try out a comic that may not appeal to you right away. I never thought I’d read anything other than Marvel and DC, but I’ve found some of my favorite stories and characters from indie comics with bizarre covers. What’s that saying again? Don’t judge a comic by it’s cover.
