POThe Cure was formed in 1976 and, in almost four decades, has been notable for its constant change of musicians, both in terms of names and numbers. It began as a quintet under the name Malice, but by the time of its first recordings it had been reduced to a trio: alongside Smith were Michael Dempsey on bass and Lol Tolhurst on drums. From then on, the group has moved between trio, quartet, quintet, and even sextet; and a long list of names have passed through its ranks, with Smith obviously remaining a constant, accompanied by the faithful company of bassist Simon Gallup since the 1980s and drummer Jason Cooper since the mid-1990s.
