ZEThe Sentinel weekly imagery is a great tool in @caltopo that is helping me out planning my hikes in early summer. The satellite view is updated every 5 days and shows the latest snow coverage.

Dear local hiking community, make sure that you educate yourself about safety protocols and about the specific location you plan to visit. All of the alpine lakes, which are popular hiking destinations here, are snow bound and it will take almost a month for snow to melt.
If I talk particularly of Sheeshnag lake, the trail is dry upto Zojipal falls and then the snow starts which may be 1/2 feet deep. Plan wisely.

Backcountry skiing in the Spring is all about understanding your route and timing it right. Using Caltopo’s custom DEM shading layer and the Sun Exposure overlay, I was able to get a better understanding of where our route crossed potentially hazardous slopes and made sure we timed our travel on those slopes to minimize the hazard of warming snow.
Using CalTopo as a trip planning tool helped us nail the route-finding and timing on this awesome spring objective!

How do I find hallways in the backcountry?
Two ways.
1. On a tour, if I see an interesting cut I’ll mark the location and look at it on a map later.
2. At home, I’ll use the Global Imagery and the NAIP agriculture layer in @caltopo and turn on False Color IR to illuminate cleared areas.
