This year’s theme, “Voices Then, Voices Now,” encouraged students to explore historical movements in democracy to inspire civic action today. Since 2019, the Student Voter Registration Drive has helped register and pre-register over 100,000 new voters!

🌟 **Turning Student Advocacy into Reality: A Heartfelt Thanks!** 🌟 On March 8, 2022, during Civic Week, we had the privilege of meeting City Council Member Chi Ossé, who represents New York City’s 36th District, including Bedford-Stuyvesant and North Crown Heights. Our discussion focused on a crucial issue: the need for filtered water fountains in our school. 💧 This initiative was inspired by my students frequently asking for bottled water, which highlighted a significant need for sustainable hydration solutions. Seeing this as an opportunity for hands-on learning, we encouraged our students to advocate for themselves. They crafted a compelling presentation that turned into a driving force for our campaign. 📊 Council Member Chi Ossé was so impressed by their efforts that he invited them to participate in the Participatory Budgeting (PB) initiative. Thanks to the strong community support and the dedication of our students, we secured $56,000 in funding for seven new water fountains for Bedford Academy High School! 🙌 This summer, the new water fountains were installed, and I want to extend my deepest gratitude to City Council Member Chi Ossé and the Bedford-Stuyvesant community for their incredible support. Your commitment has made a significant difference in our school, providing a lasting resource for our students. 🌸 RPV was honored to welcome students from our Sister City, Sakura City, Japan, to City Hall last week! The students met with @lasdlomita and @lacountyfd, learning about their equipment and emergency response techniques, toured the Ken Dyda Civic Center, and ended the day at the Point Vicente Interpretive Center. There, the group met their local host families, shared dinner, and performed music showcasing their culture and talents before a crowd that included Mayor Paul Seo, Mayor Pro Tem Steve Perestam, Councilmember Dave Bradley, Councilmember Barbara Ferraro, and City Manager Ara Mihranian. Since 2001, Miraleste Intermediate School has hosted more than 300 students from two middle schools in Sakura City for a weeklong visit, enabling students from both cities to attain a robust cultural understanding and appreciation of both countries. Building on that bond, RPV and Sakura City made their cross-cultural friendship official by becoming sister cities in August 2020. In the years since, both cities have shared their cultures and traditions through programming and visits.
