Many people turned to Dutch white clover as an alternative to turf grass lawn. The problem with this is that it’s considered an invasive plant in many parts of North America.
Yes, it can help with nitrogen fixing. Yes, it’s heat tolerant. Yes, it’s drought tolerant. But it’s also slowing taking over areas previously occupied by native groundcovers.
As a food source for pollinators, it largely favours the non-native honeybee (which really don’t need our help). The native bees and other insects prefer native bees and other insects prefer native plants.
And if you’re looking for native nitrogen fixing plants, In Our Nature’s website has a great list.
And, like many of you, I also planted Dutch white clover when I was starting out. The marketing worked on me. But now that I know better, I’m trying to do better.

SOI’ve been looking for a four-leaf clover since God knows when. 🍀
Every time I come across a patch of clovers, my first instinct is always the same, maybe this time. I slow down, scan every little leaf, hoping one of them will be different… but somehow, I’ve never found one. Not even once.
I don’t know when I’ll finally come across it… or if I ever will. But I’m not giving up yet. I think there’s something quietly hopeful about still choosing to look, every single time.
And in the process, I always end up picking and pressing the three-leaf ones instead; for my journals, for cards, for little crafts here and there. They may not be “lucky” in the way a four-leaf clover is said to be, but they’re just as beautiful in their own way.💚
Maybe someday I’ll find one…
but until then, I’ll keep searching. 🍀 🤞🏾💚
